It is necessary to shift from multilayered, multimaterial packaging to films composed only of one material, as this would ensure their ease of collection, sorting and recyclability. But this comes with significant challenges as multilayers allow for various properties to be delivered in one packaging structure while monolayers may show insufficient vapor, oxygen or light barriers. Mono-material based packaging has a big potential to meet the requirements for circularity and to contribute to global sustainability goals. However, if replacement of packaging to ensure circularity causes a reduction of shelf life or other properties desired by the consumers, causing increase in food waste, green house gas emissions neutrality will not be achieved.This project aims to study state of the art sustainable material solutions on dairy products model systems, focusing on how to maintain nutritional and sensory quality of the product, reduce food waste and the current complexity of packaging materials. The novel packaging materials need to be fully tailored to the food they target to protect. Current systems unfortunately do not measure up to the challenge.
