The opening of a Warsaw office enabled APCO to meet the business needs of clients in central/ eastern Europe. Client satisfaction is apparent from the high percentage of referrals generated to APCO 75 per cent of clients worked with the firm previously. APCO developed a number of successful campaigns in 2007, such as one to increase awareness of origin marking among international MEPs and political groups. The campaign resulted in a Written Declaration adopted with a record amount of signatures. The crisis communications team also did outstanding work on a company restructuring in Belgium. In less than 24 hours, they devised and initiated a plan responding to questions from media and stakeholders from 10 different countries. Additionally, APCO launched the Spirit initiative to promote a strong sense of team. Numerous events were organized including national day celebrations for the 19 nationalities employed, and a wellness week including Tai chi and coaching on life balance. The company’s renowned exchange programme also provides employees insights from other offices around the globe, while encouraging inter-office connectivity and a flow of international new business to the European office.Burson-Marsteller has achieved significant yearon-year growth for the seventh straight year. This has enabled us to expand our senior team with consultants such as Michiel van Hulten, a former MEP, Virginia Mucchi, a former producer on BBC2’s flagship programme ‘Newsnight’ and Dennis Landsbert-Noon, a former publisher of the European Voice, arriving. We have continued to build and maintain long-standing client relationships. As an example, Burson-Marsteller has worked for more than 15 years for Anheuser-Busch, the American brewer, on all EU issues impacting the manufacture, promotion and sale of its products in Europe. This year, we were invited by the International Diabetes Federation to produce a second edition of the “EU Diabetes Policy Puzzle” to assess national diabetes policies across the EU. The latest audit aims to highlight the inequalities in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes that exist in Europe today. We have also won significant new business in the past year. New clients include Danone, De Beers, European Lamps Federation, Intel, Neste Oil, and several others. Finally, we are proud that our consultants stay with us for many years. This stability, we believe, is one of the key strengths of our office. We provide regular training for all our staff, which contributes both to the quality of our work and to people retention.GPlus continues to work successfully on some of the largest public affairs campaigns in Brussels. These include advising Gazprom on EU energy liberalization and working with Microsoft to engage with the Commission and Brussels-based media. In the past year, notably, GPlus helped two clients achieve outstanding results: a French insulation manufacturer, threatened by obscure EU legislation, faced a situation where its market would disappear. GPlus helped the client make its case with key EU actors, managing to stave off the threat. GPlus advises the Press Service of the Russian Presidential Administration on EU media relations, as part of a worldwide consortium. GPlus helped Russia tell its story amid rising international tensions. Priding itself on providing the highest quality, Gplus’ clients such as Microsoft, Aviva, RBS and BHP Billiton have been in place for many years. Over the past 12 months, GPlus won 21 new clients in fields such as telecommunications, IP, ICT, Venture Capital, raw materials and creative content. The consultancy offers a unique and innovative working environment, with an open management structure and no formal practice groups. This creates added responsibilities and opportunities, including for entry-level staff, who are deeply engaged with clients. Consequently, staff retention is exceptionally high by industry standards, with departures linked to prestigious opportunities.19 EPAD AWA R D S 2 0 0 8 C e l e b r a t i n g E x c e l l e n c e i n P u b l i c A ff a i r sEuropean Public Affairs DirectoryGuide to the shortlistin association withmedia partner Lobbying is a growing industry and one in the headlines – both the European Commission and European Parliament are reviewing the role of ‘interest representatives’ amid the backdrop of the European Transparency Initiative.
