But – intriguingly – TNS Media Intelligence’s research on UK national newspapers’ coverage of Miliband and his Commons rivals from 24 February to 31 March shows how the greatest amount of press interest during PAN’s studied period was in Miliband’s call for party unity in a speech to the Scottish Labour conference. In respect of DECC stories, TNS’s Nick Burbidge said: “Ed Miliband’s statement that opposiMilibandClarkHughesmedia mover QA James Chapman Political Editor Daily Mail When do you start your new role? Right now – the start of April. To whom do you now report? Editor-in-chief Paul Dacre. How long have you been with the Mail for? Ten years. I joined the paper at 21, having trained as a journalist on the Southern Daily Echo before university. Who else is on the Mail’s political team? I’m delighted that Tim Shipman, the Sunday Telegraph’s Washington correspondent, is joining as deputy political editor. Michael Lea, Kirsty Walker and Ian Drury make up the rest of the team, and of course Quentin Letts writes his brilliant parliamentary sketches. What do you think of political blogs? I don’t have one myself, but there’s no doubt political blogs have changed the daily rhythm at Westminster. They can act as a kind of early-warning system. I’m a big fan of websites like ConservativeHome and Iain Dale. But I think there are pros as well as cons for people who write them. An increasing number of politicians have come unstuck thanks to unguarded comments they have made on a blog. What do you think of lobbyists? There are good ones and bad ones, of course. It’s stupid to condemn an industry wholesale. But I think there’s a real problem in the ‘revolving door’ of people who move straight from government into highly paid lobbying jobs. Some of what we’ve learned about the House of Lords in recent months is very worrying.Source: TNS Media Intelligence for Public Affairs Newstion to wind turbines should be as socially unacceptable as not wearing seat belts was criticised.” Shadow energy secretary Greg Clark has had a low media profile. Burbidge added: “While the Lib Dems’ Simon Hughes is a well-known politician, he was quoted in the nationals just once on energy issues, when he criticised apparent disorganisation within Labour and DECC towards energy policy”. Hughes’ other appearances, such as comments as MP for Bermondsey following Jade Goody’s death, were unconnected with his role as the Lib Dems’ man on the energy brief.ON THE BLOGS Atfield and Miller exchange fire Interesting reading posted on the SpinWatch website on 24 March – the reproduction of an email exchange between the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency’s David Miller (pictured right) and Ben Atfield (left) of recruitment firm Ellwood Atfield. The email exchange was first published as a feature in Communicate Magazine, and the subject of their debate is, inevitably, potential regulation of lobbyists. After Miller has started the debate rolling by arguing why a mandatory lobbying register is needed, Atfield doesn’t mince his words, opening his first email with: “Hello David, If you’re not careful, your approach will end up contributing to the prevailing climate of cynicism and lack of trust in politics.” Emails duly flow with arguments over ‘transparency’ and so on, with Atfield concluding the debate with the following barb: “You are dangerously naïve if you think the state is a value-free, disinterested body. You want every campaigning body with a ‘vested interest’ registered and policed. Sounds totalitarian to me and I’ll lobby to stop that any day. Very best, Ben.” To read the exchange in full head to either www.spinwatch.org or its original source, www.communicatemagazineApril 2009 | PublicAffairsNews | 9 APRIL 2009www.publicaffairsnews.cinside this issueCelic departs HSBC for Prudential role By IAN HALLPreparing for power How would the Tories tackle their first 100 days? page 18 ‘The register does not work’ View from Brussels PAGE 13 A picture of health?
