Tyres can play a significant role in reducing CO2 emissions as they account for 20 to 30 per cent of vehicles’ total fuel consumption. For passenger cars, fuel efficient, low-rolling-resistance tyres can save up to 10 per cent in fuel consumption. Systematically choosing fuel-efficient tyres can thus significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions in road transport. As road transport is responsible for almost 25 per cent of CO2 emissions, opting for better performing tyres can go a long way in helping Europe to achieve its climate targets. Some 78 per cent of tyres sold in Europe are for the replacement of old tyres. Boosting the use of fuel-efficient tyres is therefore a responsibility of each of us. Soon we won’t have any excuses when asking for new tyres. Opting for ecofriendly tyres will become very straightforward thanks to a European-wide consumer-friendly and easy to read labelling system. The labels will have a similar design to ones used for household appliances. It is natural to opt for the most ecofriendly washing machine or dishwasher. From 2012 we will also be able to make an equally well-informed and ecological choice when it comes to tyres. All of this could be achieved without creating extra costs or causing unnecessary red tape for the automotive industry. In times when the European car industry is struggling to survive, this is not a luxury. The new tyre labelling system is a very straightforward measure with substantial environmental and consumer benefits, at no extra cost to the car parts industry; a perfect example of effective European law making. Parliament’s industry, research and energy committee adopted the report on the proposed directive by a large majority on March 31, and parliament will vote on the proposal this month. was very lively. A wealth of new proposals came forward, some contradicting each other. The end consensus seems quite ambitious. There is a reaction to the latest EU commitments to reduce greenhouse gases from transport. It is no longer good enough to wait around for technical progress to help reduce emissions. There is consensus that a sustainable future for transport implies urgent planning now. TEN-T was developed long before the 2004 and 2007 accession, so it had neglected to account for new transport infrastructure connecting ‘old’ and ‘new’ countries or neighbouring states like Ukraine. The review expresses very clearly the need for a reorientation in this sense. The most challenging problem remains the unwillingness of the member states to look beyond their own noses – national planning logics still end at the national border. The commission’s proposal to create a core network passed the vote – it must now develop in cooperation with the parliament. The importance of intermodal exchange in the transport chain was underestimated in the old concepts, but will now be in the focus of development – while the transport chain continues to have missing links between ship and rail, vast numbers of containers will be transported by road.Now is the time to discuss the future of the trans-European transport network, argues Eva LichtenbergerT Eva Lichtenberger is a member of parliament’s transport and tourism committeehe story of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) began with the vision to create a network of excellence, built primarily on rail. The financial crisis and the urgency for member states to prop up their banking systems present new challenges for the advancement of the TEN-T. So now is the right moment to discuss the future of the network. The commission presented its paper with some new ideas and the result of a series of consultations to propse new recommendations.
