european news US Chamber hunts director Brussels role created to champion the ‘reduction of regulatory barriers’ BRUSSELS: The US Chamber of Commerce is hunting an executive director for its Brussels office to ‘advocate a pro-business agenda before European policymakers’. The person taking the newly created position will be tasked with championing ‘reduced regulatory barriers’ and ‘gathering political, policy and business information about what is happening in Brussels and Europe’. The US Chamber’s HQ in Washington DC told PAN that the creation of the position ‘recognised that the EU is incredibly important for The US Chamber is a different organisation to powerful Brussels lobby group AmCham EU, focusing more on monitoring and information gathering for its US-based members, as opposed to direct lobbying in the EU. ❚ Dr Rainhardt Freiherr von Leoprechting has taken over as president of EuroCommerce from Senator Feargal Quinn. New European affairs boss for air-traffic body AMSTERDAM: The body describing itself as ‘the global voice of air-traffic management’ has named a new director of European affairs. Gunter Martis starts with CANSO (the ‘Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation’) next month, replacing Marie Desseaux, who is retiring. The Austrian national has more than three decades’ experience in the aviation sector, and has been IATA’s Air traffic: CANSO is ‘global voice’ American presence in Europe: EU ‘incredibly important for US firms’ European director of safety, operations and infrastructure since late 2006. Du Marchie Sarvaas set for H K move BRUSSELS: Hill Knowlton has appointed a new MD of public affairs in Brussels as it confirms a set of redundancies including two senior figures. Carel du Marchie Sarvaas is to join the agency in the MD role this autumn. The Dutch national joins from The Centre, and has formerly worked at Weber Shandwick and Ogilvy. But H K confirmed that long-serving PA man David Spence and Dimitri Schildmeijer, a corporate comms specialist who only joined as a director a few months ago from oil giant Exxon Mobil (PAN, Feb), have both left. PAN understands that seven staff have been let go in total. H K told PAN: “Like a lot of companies, H K Brussels has felt the impact of the economic downturn. We have therefore undertaken some restructuring to be in better shape for future growth. This involved some redundancies. “At the same time we have been looking to rejuvenate and strengthen the team in preparation for the new terms of the European Parliament and European Commission.” The agency said it was also recruiting to other senior public affairs positions.
