Smiths Detection grows EU presence BRUSSELS: Smiths Detection, a division of the British-based engineering conglomerate Smiths Group, is seeking to boost its clout among EU policymakers as it grows its Brussels office. The company has appointed Caroline Persson as government relations co-ordinator, working on various issues in the defence and security sector. Persson was formerly European policy adviser for BT in Brussels. Smiths Detection appointed Magnus Ovilius as V-P of government relations in Brussels nine months ago. He was previously with the European Commission, from 1996. TV NEW EU LOBBYIST FOR TECH LOBBY GROUP: TechAmerica Europe (formerly AeA Europe) has named Feodora von Franz as EU affairs manager. Formerly at Eamonn Bates Europe, she has replaced Abigail Cottrell, who is now in an account manager role at Business in the Community in the UK. BRUNSWICK OFFICE GROWTH: Brunswick has appointed Mara Paixao as an account director. The Portuguese national joins the eight-strong office on 18 August from Hill Knowlton. Brunswick has also appointed Dr David Doyle as senior policy adviser. The Irish national was most recently head of EU parliamentary affairs at ACCA. NOKIA EXEC BECOMES EDIMA PRESIDENT: James Waterworth, EU lobbyist for mobile-phone firm Nokia, has been elected president of the European Digital Media Association (EDiMA) for the next 12 months. EDiMA is lobbying for ‘the completion of the Digital Single Market’. SEAP UNVEILS NEW MEMBERS: Marina Francke and Ramy Zaki of P G, Susanne Hammerström of Diplomat PR, Serge Thines of McDonald’s Europe, Claire Darmon of Freshfields, and Rozenn Marechal of the European Vending Association have joined the Society of European Affairs Professionals (SEAP) since April.
