news PPCs take jobs as public affairs consultants Conservative election candidate launches own PA consultancy; another takes role at PLMR The Conservatives’ PPC for Yeovil, Kevin Davis, has launched a public affairs consultancy named Cratus, after the Greek god of strength. Davis told PAN that clients of his new venture already include National Grid Property, the London Development Agency, CNM Estates, Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation, teenpregnancy charity Straight Talking and the Centre for Accessible Environments. Cratus is based in Kingston-uponThames and is being run by Davis with Nick Kilby, a fellow Tory councillor who is ex-Indigo Public Affairs. They have just hired Ben Sherreard, a Tory councillor in Maidstone who is exWeber Shandwick, while Cratus also has Labourand Lib Dem-following associates. Davis has a background in charities and told PAN: “Smaller charities don’t spend enough time networking with local and national politicians, often relying on their CEOs to do it, because they haven’t got the resources.” Davis fought the Lib Dem-held seat of Kingston Surbiton at the 2005 election. He needs a swing of more than eight per cent to win Yeovil, which is currently held by Lib Dem MP David Laws. ❚ The Conservatives’ PPC for Bournemouth West, Conor Burns, has joined the consultancy PLMR as an associate director, working two days a week. The managing director of Claphambased PLMR, Kevin Craig, is himself a Labour PPC in South Suffolk. Burns ran for the Tories in Eastleigh in the 2001 and 2005 general elections. He stands an excellent chance of making it third time lucky in his bid to become an MP, as Bournemouth West has a national Tory majority of 2,608 – incumbent MP Sir John Butterfill is standing down. Former Lib Dems comms director Olly Grender MBE also works with PLMR for three days each week (PAN, Apr). Craig told PAN: “Conor’s experience with DeHavilland will be a real boost to help us develop our monitoring services, and Olly’s media nous is second to none.” See p4 story on ‘Get Elected’, plus ‘MPs in our midst’, pp22-24 Bingle ushers in age of austerity as champers remains cellared BELL POTTINGER PUBLIC AFFAIRS (BPPA) has opted against holding its traditional champagne reception during the party-conference season. Its decision suggests that a period of austerity has arrived at one of the consultancy world’s most lavish conference-season entertainers. BPPA chairman Peter Bingle told PAN: “This is the first time we have decided not to organise a champagne party during my time here – more laden reception at Labour’s conference. Last year it switched its bash to the Conservatives’ gathering. Bingle said that this year BPPA would be hosting a number of lunches and dinners “where politicians can engage in serious discussions with the business community”. He added: “These dinners will be more focused than a big party – they’re what politicians want and more in keeping with the new mood.” BPPA lost various high-profile clients last year such as McDonald’s, HSBC, eBay and Asda’s national account. But it has this year won briefs from clients including National Express Group, Alstom, National Grid Property and the ALMR. Bingle is upbeat about BPPA’s prospects, saying: “The market believes that the Tories are coming and BPPA is best placed to advise clients on how best to deal with change.” Bingle: “focused dinners” for BPPA at the party conferences than eight years.
