out and about my life CRAIG JONES Head of media and public affairs Legal Services Board Where do you live? Near Liverpool Street. I have been in the central-east bit of London since moving here four years ago. What’s your media diet? The comment pages of all the broadsheets at breaks during the day, followed by some political and very nonpolitical blogs. For lighter reading, PopBitch on a Thursday is always entertaining. What’s your favourite restaurant/night out? There’s a great place on the South Bank that you can take your own bottle of wine to and sit overlooking the Thames when the sun goes down. That, with some good friends, followed by a clubbing trip, would be my favourite night out. What’s your favourite TV show? The West Wing all the way. ‘What Would Leo Do?’ is written on the top of my PC, just like it was on CJ Cregg’s. Unlike her, I mostly use it for deciding where to go for lunch. What was your first PA job? It was for a children’s charity, involving stunts such as beaming an image of the PM in a hoodie onto Parliament, and taking Lily Allen and 100 kids to deliver a report to Gordon Brown. It was through this that I met Harriet Harman, who wanted to talk about similar issues to the ones we raised, and she asked me to work with her as her speechwriter. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I’d concentrate the lion’s share of welfare spending on the first five years of a child’s life. I would also make legal education a major priority, looking at more ways to make people aware of their legal rights and how the law can protect them. This could be through better-funded community advice, educating early through the school curriculum or even an NHS Direct-style advice line. When and where is your next holiday? I’m going to Greece this month. On my 27th birthday I’ll be on a ferry to Athens, potentially a little hungover. What are you reading? I’ve just finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. If you were stuck in a lift with a parliamentarian who would you choose? I’d like to choose a former parliamentarian, Mo Mowlam. She was charismatic, tactile and had an ability to make people she was with feel like they were the most important person in the world to her – and that made her a brilliant communicator. What’s your favourite drink and where do you drink it? Gin and tonic on a sunny Saturday in Victoria Park with an iPod dock. Where do you think you’ll be in ten years? Below sea level, according to the man who should have been US president. Stakeholder: out and about in the PA industry... Wembley one day, PA agency the next... A member of the public affairs fraternity has beaten Stakeholder to a lifelong dream: stepping out to play a competitive game at Wembley Stadium. Dave Hodges, a 23-yearold studying for an MSc in Public Affairs and Lobbying at Brunel University, Hodges: Wembley wizard played for Derbyshire side Glossop North End against Whitley Bay in the final of the FA Vase (the final score was, alas, two-nil to the North-Easterners). When emailing a photo of his exploits across to Stakeholder, Hodges – currently on a threemonth loan deal with public affairs agency Politics Direct – added this info to the email: ‘Our Politics Direct five-a-side team played Bell Pottinger last week and won 32-5, which the office is very proud of!’. How many goals Hodges rattled in is undisclosed, but we assume it was a fair few. tion in building a team who do far better than I did on my own,” he said, happy as larry. Well, we hope you recycled it, Stephen... Also in buoyant mood at the PAN Awards was Stephen Hale, because the think-tank of which he is director – Green Alliance – picked up the ‘Think-tank of the Year’ title. So ebullient was Hale indeed that his handsome glass award picked up a “heavy chip”. Hale meekly asked PAN’s event staff the following morning if he could have an PAN aw ard: befor “unblemished replacement”, “heavy chipping” e adding that Green Alliance “would be happy to cover the cost of a replica”. No problem, we said, quietly confident that the original would be properly recycled in accordance with Green Alliance’s mission. Brussels lobbyist: ‘No need’ to respond While recently scanning the Brussels media, Stakeholder spotted that a well-known auto company has apparently appointed a new Brussels office head in the past month or so. We thought this was worth registering in PAN and so called up the company to verify facts, get a few more details, etc. Somewhat bafflingly, the man with the new job – for it was to him we spoke – redirected us to HQ in another country to get his own biog details. So, we duly contacted HQ, which – quite understandably – redirected us back to him. After another couple of nudges we received the following email from our man: ‘Thank you very much for your request. Please accept our apologies but from our point of view there is no need to come back to your questions.’ ‘No need’? We’re charmed. Macmillan’s Hobday: new vocation found Few PA pros were prouder at last month’s PAN Awards than Macmillan Cancer Support’s top lobbyist, Mike Hobday. Not only did the charity’s PA team win two categories, but also new recruit, Lucy Grove, bagged the gong for ‘Newcomer of the Year’. As his team picked up the trophies, Hobday was left mulling over the fact he made the shortlist but was pipped for the post in the category of ‘In-House Professional of the Year’ back at the first PAN Awards in 2005. So, how did he feel seeing his team go one stage further and actually get their hands on the prizes in 2009? “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach. But I still never know what reaction I am going to get when I tell people. Some people (usually ex-scouts, I must admit) get very excited and start recounting camping tales, whereas I suspect everyone else just wonders why a woman in her mid-twenties spends her Tuesday evenings at the local scout hut. I was never a scout, but got involved when my local troop sent out letters desperately looking for volunteers – now I’m really glad that I did. I can’t think of many other volunteering opportunities where you go abseiling one day and help cub scouts gain their PR badge the next! It’s not all knots these days, you know.
