The consensus was ‘no’. Unite’s Rachael Maskell outlined how unions can support people facing redundancy, changes in conditions, long hours, stress and workplace bullying. APPC chairman Robbie MacDuff spoke about how Unite’s parliamentary staff branch supports MPs’ researchers. Edelman account director Luke Pollard said: “In tough economic times, being a member of a trade union gives you your very own HR department you can call on if things go wrong.” Further events are planned, including possible promotion at this autumn’s party conferences. Jonathan Sheppard, who recently started work at Ellwood Atfield in an ‘advisory capacity’ (see full 1 July story online), has set up a website at www.scrapedms.com. It argues that EDMs are outdated, costly to print and largely ineffective. Sheppard said: “£8.99 – the cost of setting up a website – and an email to MPs should be more effective than an EDM.” Sheppard, who fought the Nottinghamshire seat of Bassetlaw in the 2005 general election, has emailed all MPs to get them to back his campaign. Their responses are being published on the site. Nick Allan, a former press secretary at Britain’s embassies in Washington and Paris, has joined Portland as an associate partner. Allan was posted to the UK’s Representation to the EU in Brussels between 1996 and 1999. Portland has also hired Ruth Farrer-Langton as a senior account manager.
