Unlike several other ministers tracked in this slot in previous editions of Public Affairs News, TNS Media Intelligence found that Burnham’s media presence has not been significantly higher than those of his opposite frontbenchers, apart from a ‘spike’ related to coverage of the green paper on care for the elderly. Andy Burnham Andrew Lansley Norman Lamb Source: TNS Media Intelligence for Public Affairs News media mover Q A ben walker Editor Windpower Monthly The Conservatives’ top man on the health beat, Andrew Lansley, was critical of the green paper for offering only a range of uncosted options for debate rather than concrete decisions. But Lansley’s profile in the national press was rather low over the period. “The Lib Dems’ Norman Lamb appeared in the national press during the period studied almost as many times as Andrew Lansley,” said TNS’s Nick Burbidge. Tell us about the mag... We’ve just celebrated our 25th anniversary, having grown up with the industry from its small-scale beginnings in co-operatives through to today’s commercial wind farms. It’s an interesting time for the sector at the moment... It certainly is. The biggest market for us is the US, and President Obama’s climate bill – which is going through Congress – could have major impacts for our readers across the Atlantic. Here in the UK, the government has just published its renewable energy strategy. We’ll be analysing all legislation very carefully. Why do you think Britain – despite being a windy island – has relatively little electricity generated by wind? The chief reason is a historical lack of government determination to get wind farms built. Of course turbines impact upon the landscape, but so do roads and pylons. The key is to make the case to the public that we need renewables, and that we can’t continue going along as we are. Offshore wind is a massive opportunity for the UK. How long were you at Regeneration Renewal for? Seven brilliant years. Before that I was at a food trade magazine, and before that I wrote about nightclubs and interviewed often monosyllabic DJs for a website that went bust along with many others at the end of the dotcom boom. ON THE BLOGS ‘Kick back and relax’ in Brussels Brussels lobbyists tend to depart the Belgian capital en masse during August but www.theeulobby.eu – the blog run by Grayling’s office in the city – contains a suggestion for those remaining behind. In a post on 22 July entitled ‘A sliver of Rio in the Brussels summer’, senior account manager Rob Francis suggests ‘kicking back and relaxing’ at ‘Bruxelles les Bains’, which is open until 23 August. He explains: ‘Sunning oneself beside an industrial canal may not seem like everyone’s idea of fun, but this would no doubt be refuted by the many visitors to Bruxelles les Bains. In the summer the quay beside the Brussels canal, a couple of hundred metres from Yser metro station, is transformed into a Copacabana-beach-meetscocktail-bar plage urbaine. OK, so you can’t swim in the canal, and nor would you want to, but as an after-work destination to soak up the evening rays, you can’t beat it. “We could be in Rio” proclaimed The Lobby’s companion, perhaps overstating the case somewhat, but as you sip your mojito framboise on the edge of a beach volleyball court, you could be forgiven for thinking that you had been transported to tropical climes. ‘Of course, such an event is rather dependent on the weather, but given a fair evening, as the sun dips below the offices on the opposite side of the shore, there are few better places to enjoy a Brussels summer.’ Public Affairs News is already digging out the Speedos...
