Future EU transport strategy Green corridors ociety is currently facing two problems which we must take seriously: the economic crisis and climate change. This twin crisis ought to be handled in an offensive way. Europe should seize the opportu- nity to revitalise and renew its economy in order to facilitate the shift to an eco-efficient economy. An eco-efficient economy is about creating more wealth while decreasing the negative impact on the environment. There is actually no contradiction between economic growth and being careful about the environment. On the contrary, I would say that an eco-efficient economy will provide for good business opportunities and will thus help to create both new jobs and new companies. Sweden for instance has managed to cut its CO2 emissions by nine per cent since 1990 and at the same time maintain a good economic growth rate. Subsequently the Swedish gov- ernment aims to cut CO2 emissions by 40 per cent by 2020. The transport sector is a major part of the emission problem, but also an important part of the solution. New S Leif Zetterberg sets out what he thinks Europe must do to develop an efficient transport system Policymakers in Brussels are being urged to create an integrated European network for passenger and freight traffic vehicles, new engines and fuels, together with eco-driving, are good examples. In order to move Europe towards an eco-efficient economy the transport system must continue to be reshaped. For the development of a sustainable and eco-efficient transport system in Europe the Swedish presidency will give priority to three issues: new technologies/intelligen transport systems (ITS), efficient freight transport logistics, and the EU trans- port policy after 2010. A new white paper on the European transport policy for the next decade is currently under preparation by the European commission. The Swedish presidency will devote considerable time and energy discussing the topics summarised in six main trends and challenges: ageing, migration and internal mobility, environmental challenges, the availability of energy resources, urbanisation and globalisation. To meet the challenges we need to link different transport modes more closely. The European transport system must be efficient and to achieve this we must support the introduction and use of new technologies. Both logistics and new technol- ogies/ITS can be useful to lower the burden on the climate and the environment and at the same time contribute to reducing costs for industry and society. It is of great impor- tance that the potential of the existing transport systems can be fully exploited by improved logistics. It is also urgent that we speed up the introduction of existing technical solutions in order to reach ambitious goals. The Swedish presidency will organise a high level meeting in Gothenburg on 26-27 October on the future of road transport.
