2009 Economic & Monetary Affairs MEP AWARDS 2009 1 Göran Färm S&D Sweden Göran Färm is good with numbers. You might well expect this from a member of the budgets committee that is respected for his dedication to financial control, but it wasnt always this way. Färm started his career wallowing in words, not numbers, as a journalist on a variety of publications, including a stint as editor-in-chief of a newspaper for young social-democrats. He then tried his had at advertising, and spent time working with trade unions before entering the 1990s as a fully-fledged politician, taking on party, regional and international posts. As a sitting S&D deputy in the parliament he has had opportunity to use this wide experience as rapporteur on a number of pressing financial matters. During his tenure he has thrashed out last-minute conciliation deals, funnelled much needed cash to victims of natural disasters and helped provide vital assistance in reconstructing the former Yugoslavian states. Pervenche Berés S&D France Pervenche Berés was once voted one of the 100 most powerful women in the European financial world by dint of her role as chairwoman of the economic and monetary affairs committee in the European parliament. Sitting at the helm of this influential committee Berés worked as rapporteur on dozens of pieces of legislation hoping to regulate and supervise financial services in Europe. However, even before becoming a committee chair she was making waves as the chairwoman of the parliaments French Socialist delegation for seven years, and as part of the group that produced the text of the European constitution. She has shown a life long dedication to politics, having originally graduated from the Institut dEtudes Politiques in Paris, and then working as an administrator in the French National Assembly throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Jean-Paul Gauzès EPP France Jean-Paul Gauzès claims to be a professional European politician from the top of his head right down to the tips of his toenails. Indeed, as a member of the economic and monetary affairs committee he has worked hard to push for agreements with third party countries such as Monaco and San Marino on taxation of savings. But then he has always been one for laying down the law. Both he and his wife are lawyers by training, though its worth noting he also holds degrees in politics and economics. Alongside stints in the ministry of education, as the mayor of Sainte- Agathe-dAliermont and member of the Haute-Normandie Regional Council he practised law at various times right up until 1998, and was still working as a legal advisor to the banking sector as recently as 2007.
