Iain Duncan Smiths proposals on welfare are very interesting and detailed, and we will look very closely at them. Given the very difficult situation with the public finances, Im not sure how much quick progress you can make, but we will see how much of his work is do-able and, if it is, what kind of time frame we might have to do it in. There is a lot of work to be done before we can adopt any of his suggestions as policy. Earlier this year I introduced a ten-minute rule bill calling for transparency about where legislation originates. If you are a minister bringing bills before the House of Commons, then you should have a pretty good idea about whether you are doing them as a result of a European directive, or whether it is something you yourself decided to do. As for the parties that we are dealing with in the EU, they are mainstream parties who are either in, or have been in, government in their respective countries. All the criticisms that have been levelled at the other members of the group have been robustly dealt with, either by our foreign affairs team or by those MEPs themselves. I am very comfortable with that, and I think that we have got an honest grouping in the European Parliament which campaigns for the issues that are important to us. I think thats very good for the debate in Britain. If the Conservatives are successful at the next general election, then there will be a lot of new MPs in this place.
