We are going to get questions about expenses, obviously, and to some extent people will tar us all with the same brush. I have actually had a very, very good response on the doorstep. Its no secret that in general people are apathetic towards politics, but Im a new breed, a new candidate, and I have had a good reception from the people of Glasgow. Im enjoying going out to speak to as many people as possible. For too many people politicians are people they see on the TV, read about in the paper, or never see or hear from in their lifetimes. Im not going to be one of those politicians. I was selected in September 2007, and since then Ive been knocking on doors, speaking to people and delivering leaflets, if not on a daily basis then certainly on a weekly basis. That will only continue from now until the general election, and hopefully beyond as well. Your father Mohammad is the current MP for Glasgow Central. Has your family connection been a feature of the campaign? It doesnt worry me at all. Thankfully my father has a very good reputation in Glasgow, which helps. Im standing in this election not as the Asian candidate, the Muslim candidate or the son-of-someone candidate. Im standing as the Labour candidate in my own right. I want to stand in my own right, be elected in my own right, and represent this constituency in my own right. Can Labour win the election? If so, how? Yes. I dont think David Cameron has sealed the deal with the British people. We need to get our own message out and remind people what we have done to change this country over the last 12 years. We need to expose the Tories for what they really are. I dont think that they have changed. They might have a new salesman and front man, but essentially theyre the same party. And we need to show people that if its change and new ideas they are looking for, then those ideas are coming from the Labour Party, and only the Labour Party has the right ideas to get us through this economic recession and continue to bring growth and prosperity in this great country of ours. Who or what is your political inspiration? There are people like Nelson Mandela, who has come through so many extreme circumstances to help bring South Africa to where it is now. Then there are the sporting greats like Muhammad Ali. Then there are the people in this constituency who have come from really humble backgrounds and made something of their families, with their children going on to great successes. I have been interested from a very, very young age. I have been a member of the Labour Party since I was 16 years old. I have campaigned for the party since well before that as early as the 1997 general election when I was only a wee nipper. I am committed to the Labour Party and certainly its founding principles of equality and social justice for all. Why would you make a good MP? Id bring youth and energy. I was born and brought up in the city of Glasgow. Ive lived here all my life and Im passionate about the city. I genuinely want to give something back to the city I love. Im a local man for local people. I have been involved in several campaigns for example, the campaign to save the Govan shipyard in 1999. From the age of 12 I have made trips to the Middle East which have given me a big interest in foreign policy and international development, and eradicating poverty at home and abroad. Its those issues I want to fight for and campaign for during my life, and hopefully I can do this through the political process as a good, active, and energetic MP for Glasgow Central.
