adjournment review Last roar of the lion Book review Edward Kennedys memoir is a story of a man who redeemed his flaws by bringing about lasting change for millions of poor Americans, writes Simon Burns the lighter, but much more readable volumes that take a broad-brush approach and give a greater insight into the subject. Ted Kennedys memoirs definitely fall into the latter category. They are well written and highly readable, capturing the close relationship that he had with his father, whom he clearly adored, possibly because as the youngest child he spent more time with him, and writes movingly about his lifetime commitment to improving the healthcare system. The Kennedys were a famously close family: at one point Kennedy writes, somewhat facetiously, that he assumed none of them would Over 47 years in marry because they had each other the Senate, Ted for support and companionship. It was a tragic accident in which he panicked, as most of us would have done, accepted the responsibility for his actions and then lived with the consequences and heartache for the rest of his life. Flawed he may have been in some ways, but he redeemed this by his record of assiduously representing and fighting for a better and fairer society for all, and this memoir is a fitting tribute to his lifetime work. I t always struck me as somewhat odd that when Ted Kennedy died in late August, the one fellow Democrat the BBC used to pay tribute to him was the former president Jimmy Carter, whom Kennedy had challenged for the presidency in 1980, rather than a closer ideological soul-mate, the former Democrat president, Bill Clinton. With the publication of Ted Kennedys posthumous memoirs, that decision seems even more bizarre because if there is one bête noire to emerge from the book, it is Jimmy Carter. As the youngest of nine children, Ted Kennedy grew up as the familys court jester, with a zeal for life and a desire to be liked. Despite being a poster boy in the 1980s and 90s for zealot-like Republican campaign funding drives, many Republicans in the Senate, such as Orin Hatch and John McCain, genuinely liked Kennedy. The same cannot be said for Jimmy Carter, and it now emerges that the antipathy was fully reciprocated by Kennedy himself. Their relationship broke down over Kennedys lifetime cause healthcare. Not only does he accuse Carter of timidity that doomed any chance of meaningful health insurance reform, but also claims that the president was virtually impossible to talk to. Clearly President Carter was a difficult man to convince of anything, he writes. One reason for this was that he did not really listen. Ironically, although Kennedy had little patience for Carters piety and punctiliousness, he found the disengagement of Ronald Reagan oddly charming even if, at times, frustrating. Although he does not say it in the book, Kennedy does have Jimmy Carter to thank, because in defeating him for the Democrat nomination for president in 1980, Carter liberated Kennedy from the expectations of all those who would gain from a restored Kennedy presidency, and allowed him to concentrate on becoming one of the finest US Senators in American history. Over 47 years in the Senate, Ted did more than his brothers to improve the daily lives of Americans, especially the downtrodden and poor, and rose to be the Lion of the Senate.
