LYNGBY A WORLD CLASS CITY Advanced technological equipment from DTU Space is headed for Mars, the store of the future is being designed at the RetailTech Lab in the commercial centre Lyngby Storcenter, Microsoft Quantum Materials Lab is the only one of its kind in the world, and Science City Lyngby lays out the framework for an innovation hub that will catapult Lyngby to a status rivaling the worlds leading scientific and academic locations. In Lyngby, the ambitions are high, and the results are clear. An old saying goes, Dont hide your light under a bushel. In todays terms this means: do not be modest and do not hold back. You need to believe in yourself and not give up. This advice still holds true. My personal version of the old saying goes a tad further. I usually say, Dont hide your light under a bushel it wont fit there anyway. Sound like a brag? That may be, but in international and not least digital times, competition for the favor of the outside world is so fierce and global that there is plenty of reason to brag, and certainly no reason to hold back. In Lyngbys case, success is firmly rooted in the local community and its individual residents. So everyone has This year, DTU admitted 330 more new students than last year. This was possible thanks to extra funding from the Danish government to the educational sector due to the Covid-19 crisis. Significantly higher interest in DTU This year, DTU has received a significant increase in the number of applications, and in the number of applicants who have a DTU program as their first priority. The number of so-called Quota 1 applications (based only on the applicants grade-point average) received by DTU has increased by 9 per cent compared to last year, that is, from 7657 last year to 8376 this year. This year more people have placed a DTU programme at the top of their list. A total of 2955 applicants have a DTU programme in Civil Engineering or Graduate Engineering at the top of their list, compared to 2827 in 2019. Again this year, General Engineering, taught in English, is the undergraduate programme with the highest number of applicants. DTU received a total of 515 applicants; 271 have DTU as their top priority. Software Technology is another popular undergraduate programme, along with Artificial Intelligence and Algorithms. Other programmes attracting many are Design and Innovation, Chemistry and Technology as well as Production and Construction. Compared to last year, 16 per cent more people have applied for the undergraduate programme in Civil Engineering, while the number of applicants for General Engineering remains more or less the same as in 2019. The study programmes Buildings and Infrastructure and Software Technology are among the most applied-for within General Engineering. reason for pride. Charlotte Mark, Chair of Science City Lyngby, puts emphasis on the broad collaboration which allows for innovation and a vibrant city, whose residents take pride in living there. Marianna Lubanski, CEO of Science City Lyngby, says that the idea of the innovation hub needs to be an integral part of local citizens image of a municipality where knowledge and skills benefit everyone. I guess there is no clearer way of making this point. Local businesses are keen to talk about what happens inside their buildings, and local citizens are hungry to find out. Knowledge & Wine is a series of events that constitute a great example of such exchange, and not only knowledge-intensive businesses are at the forefront. Car dealer Jan Nygaard does something similar by forming a symbiosis between car dealership and cultural facility, and Lyngby Football Club has boosted the local sense of community and identity. Welcome to this edition of Future - happy reading! Best regards Henrik Malmgreen, Editor-in-Chief Lately, the area north of Klampenborgvej has seen radical transformation. New construction has sprouted like mushrooms after a rain. (Drone photo: Henrik Malmgreen) An area under transformation Construction projects are popping up all over Lyngby. One area of particular action lies north of Klampenborgvej. Lots of housing and business offices are being built, not to mention a new hotel. The area has seen the appearance of Zleep Hotel as well as Ferrari and Maserati dealerships. The area near Trongårdsvej and Trongårdsparken has undergone equal transformation, as an entire new housing area has been established there.
