The annual innovation-acceleration programme Danish Tech Challenge helps feed a number of new businesses unique solutions to challenges within energy, climate and health. Basically, this unique synergy is one of our greatest advantages when it comes to taking innovation all the way down to the roots of the local community, says Charlotte Mark. She gives the example of RetailTech Lab, a living lab for retail innovation located in Lyngby Storcenter. The idea of the lab is to support local retailers by offering them new payment solutions, loyalty programmes, and exciting customer experiences to secure Lyngbys status as a thriving commercial city. The municipality is an important partner Since Charlotte Mark took over the role as chair of Science City Lyngby in June, a strategy towards 2025 has been drafted. Asked whether she can point to specific measurables for the plan to succeed, Mark replies that the most important thing is for Lyngby to continue to sparkle with cooperation and innovation. The only way to get the results we have in Lyngby is to have access to a committed municipality that participates in the concept and supports it. This goes for the project as such and for collaboration with individual businesses, Mark says. The coupling of the public and private sector is decisive. More Danish students In recent years, the business community had demanded more talent trained in the sciences. There is no doubt that having an innovation district such as the one in Lyngby-Taarbæk municipality helps to stimulate interest in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics). These skills are highly sought after, both domestically and internationally. Fortunately, the interest in natural sciences is increasing again. Due to Covid-19 the admission of international students to DTU has been lower than normal, but on the other hand, DTU was allowed to admit an additional 330 domestic students. All those seats are taken, explains Marianna Lubanski. She also mentions that the admission of female students at DTU is up as well, approaching a 40 percent share.
