The Ogunquit Playhouse, located at 10 Main St. and within view of Jonathans, draws a large theater going crowd of locals, weekend warriors and tourists from across the country. Offering the quality of acts that West wants to offer the public is important to the community, in both summer and winter. Community is important to West, who notes that there was a period of time when the community stuggled. Nearby Portsmouth, N.H., suffered major closures and layoffs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Pease International Tradeport. About 35 percent of the people worked at Pease and the shipyard, said West of local Ogunquit residents. When those went, we lost a sense of community. But West believes that his venue can reestablish that lost sense of com- munity. The intimate setting allows the audience members to talk to one another or interact with the performers. Jonathans remains a family affair. Two of Wests children work at Jon- athans now and he hopes they will continue Jonathans in some way after him.
