nite he tries throwing newer songs into the mix. It can be hard making a set list. There are times where I will do stuff because it is counter to what I am thinking, or what I want to play. Jim Gallant treats the space somewhat differ- ently: I like bars. People arent going to see me. Im background music, he said. If they like me, then thats good. Gallant is from Mexico, Maine, and now lives in New Gloucester. A guitarist since child- hood, Gallant began listening to Judd Atkins and Leo Kottke in college, adopting a finger-pick- ing style. He said a majority of his songs have become instrumental over the years: When I think of the coast, I think of the rugged indi- vidualistic lobster men. Its sort of spiritual, especially when I write instrumental songs. You arent reliant on words. He explained how working with lyrics is often difficult, saying that lyrical songs have to work on two levels at the same time. With instru- mental music I can devote all my attention to the music.Writing lyrics, you want to make an interesting story, Gallant said. I love writ- ing songs that are story songs. He added that he tries to keep songs up-tempo to make peo- ple dance. York Harbor Inn Where: 480 York St., York Harbor, Maine, Coastal Route 1A Call: 207-363-5119 Information: www.yorkharborinn.com/d ing/shipscellarpub.htm Artist Information: www.peterblack.net & www.jimgallant.com When his children were young he wrote them songs, and for his wife he wrote a song titled Living the Dream. The album of the same name featured the song The Don about the 28 people who died during one of Maines mari- time tragedies. His latest album, Old Hat Wth A New Coat, is a collection of Americana-influ- enced songs. Whaleback Mountain Night is a reflection on the scenery of the area and Pil- grims Song is a reflection of the spirit these people had when they first came to America, Gallant said. Gallant plays mostly original music but will occasionally add a few covers, though he likes to put his own spin on the songs. Often a solo act, Gallant is also part of the three-piece group Proper Perspective. He said that with the group it is nice to have harmony and bass to accompany him. One of the many moti- vations Gallant has to perform his music live is the people he meets along the way. Through his e-mail list he has met and talked with many peo- ple who attend his shows. At a show in York, Gallant ran into a man who had seen a show in Connecticut and signed up for Gallants e-mail list. There are a lot of great musicians around the area on the seacoast, Gallant said. Its all the more reason to come back and bring friends. And, if you like a musician, bring them to your area. Peter Black will perform at the York Harbor Inn on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 26, at 8 p.m., and Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. Jim Gallant will perform on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 8 p.m. Music & Nightlife Blue Ocean Music Hall 4 Oceanfront North, Salisbury Beach, Mass., 978-462-5888, www.blueoceanhall.com Cochecho Arts Festival Rotary Arts Pavilion, Henry Law Park, Dover, NH, 603-742-2218, www.dovernh.org Firehouse Center for the Arts Market Square, Newburyport, Mass., 978-46-7336, www.firehouse.org Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom 169 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, NH, 603-929-4100, www.casinoballroom.com Jonathans Ogunquit 92 Bourne Lane, Ogunquit, Maine, 207-646-4777, www.jonathansrestaurant Kelleys Row 421 Central Ave., NH, 603-750-7081, www.kelleysrow.com Maudslay Arts Center 95 Curzon Mill Road, Newburyport, Mass., 978-499-0050, www.maudslayartscenter.
