Southside Johnny. Courtesy photo. covers anyones done. With so much such great materi- al available, Southside didnt feel the need to write his own songs early on, but that changed with his fourth album, The Jukes. The habit continues through Pills & Ammo, which consists entirely of orig- inals written with keyboard player Jeff Kazee. I got caught in the middle I like to write songs, he says. But I started out as a singer, so I like to do other peoples material too. I went through that whole era where everybody had to be a singer/ songwriter and I wasnt one at that point. I just wanted to sing bluesy things and R&B. To me, you do one or the other, but I wanted to do both. Im just gonna go ahead and do it and to hell with it. The latest record, released in 2010, is loaded with the brawny, horn-driven blues-rock that hes known for. High- lights include the soulful Lead Me On, the hard-driving Cross That Line, and Umbrella in My Drink, a duet with Gary U.S. Bonds. The pair riff on Bonds 60s hit New Orleans and the Meters Hey Pocky Way at the end of the latter song a bit of studio inspiration, Southside says. Its very free-form, this band, the Jukes. We do whatever we want and if it doesnt work we turn the lights out, go home and have a party. We take a lot of chances on stage because I trust the band and they trust me, and in the studio its the same way. Most shows, the only sure things are I Dont Want to Go Home, Fever and a few other standbys. Theyre great songs, at least to me, so I dont get bored with them, South- side says. But the rest of it is always up for grabs. The one thing you never want to be is bored on stage, because then it becomes a nightmare. Good musicians want a challenge; they dont want to play the same song night after night. It isnt show business; its music. Hes excited to be returning to Hamp- ton Beach. Its a great gig for us, he says. Its a fun little beach, everybody comes to have a good time and its a great stage. Its one of my favorite stages. I always look for- ward to that.
