nite Outlaw. Courtesy photo. Billy Jones died within weeks of each other in 1995 OKeefe by drug overdose; Jones committed suicide. But the hardest loss was Thomassons death in 2007 of a heart attack. It came a little more than two years after the band had reunited for its first tour in over a decade. Asked about the decision to resume performing as the Outlaws in early 2008 after Thomassons passing, Pauls voice catches momentarily. Thats hard, he says. Obviously, he was an important part of the landscape musically. It was a challenge. I wanted to try and help be a part of putting together a really worthwhile music chapter to the bands history. The current lineup includes members of Blackhawk and Pauls solo band, which helped with the decision to move forward. Not to sound self-indulgent, but from the standpoint when Hughie passed away and Monte called me and said, What the hell am I going to do? I was like, well we can put the band back together if you want to ...every- body came to the band through me when I put it together for the 30th reunion. I know them both very well, and I know what they were capable of. So when we got together and played, it became apparent very quickly that we had weight and substance. My songwriting is still very much prolific and at a very high level, so writing new music and trying to conclude the bands story on an up note creatively and musically is sort of the challenge that I am engaged in try- ing to make happen. To that end, the band plans to record some new material with famed producer Bill Szym- czyk (Eagles, J. Geils Band) in the near future. Im excited to go back in the studio with Bill, Paul says. We havent set a date yet, but I think that that would be a very logical place for the band to start in the re-introduction of new Outlaws music to the fan base. Paul still feels energized every time he heads out on stage. I love it, he says. I couldnt imagine doing anything else.
