19 Escape velocity Jessica Prouty Band on tour newshippopress.com nite By Ellen Stuart They might not be able to play in bars, or even 18+ venues, just yet, but the teenage members of the Jessica Prouty Band have already come a long way from the garage. The heavy rock band, which will be making several stops on the Seacoast this summer, has a full schedule of tour dates throughout the East Coast and is promoting their second album, Time to Escape. Prouty has had voice training in choirs and private lessons, and it shows in her powerful vocals, which bring to mind other female- fronted heavy rock bands like Evanescence and Paramore. Prouty plays bass, and she is joined by guitarist Cody Nilsen, 17, drum- mer Cam Pelkey, 16, and Andy Covino, 15, on keys. Under the guidance of produc- er Brian Maes the band released their first album, Saving My Sanity, in 2008. The band is currently touring, making stops at Six Flags, Hampton Beach and the Stratham Fair, as well as dates in New Jer- sey, Connecticut and New York. Every day is funny on tour, Prouty said. Its also trying, but when you look back, you want to go right back to doing it. The band members say that they have missed out on some things like athletic events, parties and hanging out with friends, but agree that the band is worth it. And although the band is working hard on tour, theres a little time for regular teenage goofing around. We make Kesha music videos in the van to pass the time, Prouty said with a laugh. I was in my first band from sixth grade up until the end of seventh grade, Prouty said. My band mates were my best friends, and quitting that band had left me quite depressed, especially during those years, and my parents didnt know what to do with me. Her parents found out about a Mon- day Night Garage Band program run by the bands current producer, Brian Maes, and Prouty joined. Proutys original songs caught Maes ear, and he approached her about recording an album. I was psyched, Prouty said, but she wanted to find a band that would continue to play alongside her beyond the recording of the CD. Pelkey was brought on board first. Hes been a friend of mine since the third grade, as well as the drummer in my previous band, Prouty said. During this whole shabam, I was taking guitar lessons from Charles Low- ry, and had asked him if he had any students that had the skills to be in a serious band. He immediately said that Cody Nilsen was the guitar player I should be looking at. Prouty invited keyboard player Andy Covino from the garage band program to join, and once he agreed, the band was off and running. The band members claim a wide variety influences. Prouty said she is most influ- enced by her father and Evanescences Amy Lee. Guitarist Cody Nilson, 17, names clas- sic rock and blues artists like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robert Johnson and Son House as some of his major influences, while Pelkey veers more toward metal bands like Mon., July 19, at 7 p.m. in Ellis Park under the gazebo at York Beach. The Jessica Prouty Band recently won the Daddys Junky Music Roland Battle of the Bands and the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus Battle of the Bands, which earned the band a Gibson guitar, iPods, and the chance to record a professional music video. They were also the winners of the best song award at this years Notes for the Cure battle of the bands at Boston Childrens Hospital. For the future, the band would like to start playing larger venues and build their fan base. Wed love to get some promotional deals, and wed like to continue the trend of opening for bigger acts, Prouty said. For now, theyll continue playing shows and just being teenagers playing sports, writ- ing, and hanging out with friends. Prouty is keeping her sights on a career in music. I get my motivation from the love of my family and my passion for music, she said. The Jessica Prouty Band will Jessica Prouty Band.
