19 Superfrog is jumping Berwick band now easy to catch listingshippopress.com nite By Ellen Stuart A self-described six-man party bus, Superfrog is quickly becoming a favorite with Seacoast audiences. The band admits that they dont quite fit into a single genre. We tend to describe it either as groove-rock or rock-jam, said drummer Shane Comer. Both are essentially fitting; we are a band that occasionally goes off and jams but our shows feature a heavy dose of high-powered rock, that often gets loud and in your face in a good way. Comer and lead singer and bassist Nate Proper formed the band when they returned to their hometown of South Berwick, Maine, after college. They both work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery. Headed by Comer and Proper, the band went through several configurations before settling on its cur- rent lineup: Comer on drums, Proper on bass and lead vocals, Jeremy Fuzz Grob on guitar and lead vocals, Tony DiBerto on trumpet, Charles Cormier on guitar, and Adam Vinciguerra on auxiliary percussion and vocals. The bands name, which might sound more like a comic book hero than a band, is from a Haruki Marukami short story called Superfrog Saves Tokyo. Superfrogs influences include Umphreys McGee, moe., Rustic Overtones, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Grateful Dead and Cake. Im big into the jam band scene, Proper said. I go to a lot of shows and festivals. Personally, some of my favorites are Phish, the Grateful Dead, String Cheese Incident and Incubus. For me, its kind of cliché. I cant sit down and choose to write a song, it hits me when it hits me, and thankfully I get hit a lot!, Proper said. It feels like theres all this good music floating in the ether and it just filters into my head when it wants to. The band has a full album, Year of the Frog, out now, and a second album is completely recorded and only waiting for a release date and a name. At a live show the band plays a mix of original songs and covers, and one of their favorite covers is the Grateful Deads Shakedown Street We really added some interesting parts and tweaked it and it is always a crowd pleaser, Comer said. Proper said that an audience favorite is Call Me Al by Paul Simon. That song always gets me jumping up and down, he said. The band has a full calendar this summer, and will play on the deck of the Portsmouth Gas Light on Friday, July 23. That will be killer, Proper said. Its a venue weve wanted to get into for quite a while. The next night theyll make an appearance at Inn on the Blues in York, another date the band is excited for. Thats a great venue any time of the year but it really gets hopping this time of the summer, Proper said of Inn on the Blues. Proper said he hopes the next few years will see another Super- frog album and hopefully a cross-country promotional tour. I just cannot wait to get signed and become a multi-million- aire, Comer said. No, realistically I like the direction we are taking. Even if they never become multi-millionaires, the guys of Superfrog say that their fans make it all worth it. We had 130 or so people at The Stone Church on our tour kickoff screaming and going crazy ... on a Monday night! Comer said. It felt like a Friday or Saturday but it was a god- damn Monday night. It is moments like those when you really appreciate the fans and how much support they give. Without them we would have none of this. I dont think any of us will ever forget why we do this.
