COVER: Beyond local produce
Seacoast farmers markets can offer one-stop shopping
By Jeff Mucciarone
W
hile many people probably
still think of farmers
markets as the place to
pick up fresh, in-season produce, its
pretty clear the concept of farmers
markets has widened considerably
beyond the realm of just produce.
Today, patrons can buy meats,
cheeses, wine, maple syrup, honey,
baked goods and artwork. Dyanna
Smith, of the Seacoast Growers
Association, said farmers markets for
the Seacoast Growers Association
even feature a variety of eggs:
chicken eggs, quail eggs, turkey eggs,
duck eggs, along with different
colored eggs. Farmers markets host
special events where different items
or dishes are featured. Markets also
feature artisan vendors, as well. And
just because the seasons change, that
doesnt mean markets cant continue
deep into the fall or even winter.
I think people are working the
farmers market into their weekly
routine, Smith said. Youre able to
get fresher food because its local. ...
People recognize that we can keep
strengthening the local economy. Its
just a powerful thing to do for your
community, for yourself and for your
body.
The Newburyport (Mass.) Farmers
Market
( w w w.
thenewburyportfarmersmarket.org),
which takes place on Sundays from 9
a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tannery
Marketplace, recently had a tomato
festival at which more than 20
varieties of tomatoes were available
for sampling.
There is just an incredible array of
tomatoes at each farmers stand, said
Shari Wilkinson, founder of the
Newburyport Farmers Market.
Smith, too, has seen tomatoes star
during recent weeks.
The variety of tomatoes is pretty
unbelievable, Smith said. I couldnt
even begin to list all the varieties of
heirloom tomatoes. Many vendors
offer tomatoes in a variety collection
so you can take home tomatoes in all
different sizes and shapes and flavors.
It really livens up your menu.
As of last week, farmers were just
coming into the high time for corn.
Beyond that, all kinds of peppers and
green beans are currently in season.
The Seacoast Growers Association
(www.seacoastgrowers.org), which
hosts a series of farmers markets in
New Hampshire, is celebrating its
35th year. It started as just a group of
farmers gathering in Portsmouth. The
association is planning a celebration
on Sept. 15 at the Portsmouth market,
Smith said. Details are still being
worked out but a pie-eating contest is
possible.
We certainly have grown in terms
of our offerings, Wilkinson said. It

peaches and nectarines have been
fantastic this year, as well.
Theres just so much fruit
available, Smith echoed.
The Portsmouth market also
features opportunities to get locally
made Indian or Lebanese food.
The diversity at the market is
unbelievable,
Smith
said.

chance to interact directly with the

the grocery store. People can find out
firsthand how animals are raised and
how crops are grown.
That education piece has been
really important to consumers its
helped them make educated choices
about what theyre eating, Wilkinson
said.
Market organizers in Newburyport
were planning an event centered on
autumn squashes, though details
hadnt been finalized yet, Wilkinson
said. I think that having events is
certainly helpful with getting people
to try new things, Wilkinson said.
People can sample a variety of
things and compare them. ... Having
recipes accessible helps. ... It makes
it easier to try something new.

new things this year, Smith said.
The Newburyport Farmers Market
has a Pinterest account, as well as a
Facebook account; that helps people
stay
connected.
Its a great way for consumers to
learn about recipes, Wilkinson said,
adding, for example, if peaches are in
season, its easy to get connected to
several recipes for peaches. Its the
same when other items, such as
tomatoes and zucchini, are in season.
One of the farms had an amazing
idea to use our anniversary as a way
to give back to the community and
many of our vendors have chosen
their favorite charities and theyre
giving a portion of their proceeds
from that day to their favorite
charity, Smith said.
