19 An open musical marriage musichippopress.com nite Spend some time with the many members of Cole and the Makeout Scene By Ellen Stuart It isnt everyone who likes to stay up all night making noise, says Cole Gove. Luckily for him and for music lovers Gove has found a group of friends and musicians who are more than happy to do just that. Cole and the Makeout Scene, which is keyboardist and singer Courtney Brocks, bassist Moses Lizotte and multi-instru- mentalist Jesse Dold, have formed a collaborative group that plays together and apart. The members of the Makeout Scene all have various side projects and solo works, and that is exactly what Gove wants an open group of musicians and artists, free to experiment and explore. I would say that our band philosophy is influenced by bands such as Im From Barcelona and Broken Social Scene, Gove said. Im From Barcelona has 29 band members because they wanted to be inclusive and focus on friends and a community. Broken Social Scene is a music collective. All of its members play in various other groups and solo projects. I feel that type of atmosphere, where creativity is embraced and explored, allows great art and music to be made. The band grew out of several friendships and music proj- ects. Gove and Dold had been friends and collaborators since they were teenagers growing up in Maine. A few years ago they decided to make a longtime dream a reality. Wed always wanted to have a recording studio so when we came across some space in a local mill in Dover we rented it and set up a Pro Tools recording studio, Gove said. We called the studio The Ghost Mill because legend has it that its haunt- ed by the ghost of a little girl named Emily. As their studio business was getting started, Gove and Dold began playing with bassist Moses Lizotte, who had played with Gove in a previous band called Mustard. Brocks came on board a little later, her vocals and keyboard playing rounding out the sound of the band. We heard Courtney at the Elysium Folk Club in Rollinsford, N.H., and asked her to record some vocals, Gove said. She has a beautiful voice and fits in with this crazy group of guys, so we talked her into sticking around. The Makeout Scenes music is a blend of folk, indie and Americana: It shares a foundation, instrument-wise, with the traditional American folk music world, Brocks said, but with the addition of electric instruments and Coles unique vocal style, the sound takes on an indie quality. Gove says hes influenced by Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and Elvis Perkins in Dearland; and Brocks says that the band is influenced by the vocal harmonies of bands like Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear, while Goves vocals have earned him comparisons to Bon Iver. Brocks, who also plays banjo and guitar, has a new EP out titled After, Before. I think people will be blown away at how good it is, said Gove. Dold also has an album coming out with another band. His project is called The Dirty Daylights. The album is full of mellow, dramatic pop songs and I think it is a brilliant album that will make folks feel their heartache again. said Gove. The album is called Time is Love and will be out this fall. Cole and the Makeout Scene have just released their album Gala Was a Tiger. Gove said that finishing the album is the proudest moment hes had with the band so far. It was a blast to make, and somehow deciding that it was done and sending it out Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Seashell Stage on Hampton Beach. See www. hamptonbeach.org. The album is available for download on iTunes and the bands website (themakeoutscene. com) Gove says that although he was thrilled with the end result, finishing the album was almost a letdown. I had become really attached to the idea of recording Gala Was a Tiger and it takes so much time to make an album that I didnt know what to do with myself once it was done, he said. The fix was simple, however. So Ive started writing the next album, said Gove. Cole and the Makeout Scene have shows coming up at local farmers markets including Newburyport (Aug. 22) and will be playing the Stone Church in Newmarket on Aug. 19. Gove hopes that the future will hold more opportunities to make music and make friends. I just hope we can play lots of shows and make some more like minded friends, he said. I really enjoy having a community. That sense of creative community is also Brocks favorite part of playing with the Makeout Scene. Noth- ing matches the feeling of creating and playing music with like-minded people, she said. Aug. 18, at 7 p.m., Prescott Park, $8.
