59 I think its great, man. The music is like this infinite body of soul in its own way, its own soulful testimony. It could never be done too much. A lot of people are attached to playing the music the way it was written and its cool. That means dont copy the jams, just play your own stuff but make the song sound like its supposed to. nite I suppose thats why you show no signs of slowing down. I keep looking at myself hey, Im 64! Courtesy photo. By Michael Witthaus musichippopress.com Over the past year, bluesy folksinger Brendan Hogan made inroads into the New England club circuit, performing shows in Nashua and Portsmouth; his Dec. 17 late- night gig at Boyntons Taproom represents his first trip to Manchester. It looks like a great room, Im really look- ing forward to it, said Hogan the other day from his home in Cambridge. Long Night Coming, the CD Hogan released toward the end of last year, is the fac- tor making much of this mobility possible. Its won press accolades Boston folk guru Scott Alarik called him a beguiling blues- man and led to gigs with Kris Delmhorst, Brooks Williams, Geoff Muldaur, Eilen Jew- ell and others. Loose and unfettered, the record contains sev- en originals, two covers and Big Black Car, a update of Creams Politician that name- checks Bill Gates. The latter, along with Rock Cast in the Sea, has a lusty rock feel. Coun- tering those are Nothing Belongs to Me and Looking Up at Down Again spare, raw and world-weary, with images of bruised pillows and laying down arms suggesting Peter Case or John Prine at his most dour. Hogan cites Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, John Lennon and Bo Diddley as his guiding lights. The first three represent a pretty reli- able trinity for any folksinger. But Diddley seems more a from-the-gut player. Hes a poet, too, says Hogan. One of my favor- ite songs of all time is Who Do You Love. The night was dark, the sky was blue, down the alley the ice wagon flew theres some poetry in there. Ive got a tombstone hand, a graveyard mind, Im just 21, I dont mind dying theres poetry in there too. These influences intersect nicely on one of the records highlights, Whats The Difference, a gorgeous, smoky duet with Boston singer Dan- ielle Miraglia. When I listen to music, I always hear the sound of it first which is strange, Hogan says. Words will filter down through the sound after a few listens, so Im always look- ing for things that are honest and feel like theyre coming from a sincere place. I think Dylan and Van Zandt do it the best. Thats the kind Please mention this Hippo ad of aesthetic I like ... dirtier sounds.
