A 6www.telegraph.co.uk/jobThursday, February 19, 2009THE DAILY TELEGRAPHAPPRENTICESHIPS THE BIG INTERVIEWThe Daily TelegraphCUTTING EDGE CELEBRITY HAIRDRESSER CHARLES WORTHINGTON, MBE, IS FAMED FOR HIS CREATIVE SKILLS AND HIS HIGH-PROFILE CLIENTS. HE SEES APPRENTICESHIPS AS A KEY PART OF DEVELOPING FUTURE TALENT, WITH HIS FIRM’S TRAINING PROGRAMME CONSOLIDATING SKILLS THAT ARE LEARNED ON THE SHOP FLOOR AND AT COLLEGE, AS HE TELLS BARBARA LANTIN CHARLES WORTHINGTON IS CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF CHARLES WORTHINGTON SALONS AND WINNER OF SEVERAL AWARDS. HE IS ON CALL FOR RED CARPET EVENTS AND HIS FIRM WAS OFFICIAL HAIRDRESSER FOR THE BAFTA PRESENTATIONS. HE TRAINS PEOPLE AT ALL LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE. WITH TODAY’S EMPHASIS ON A COLLEGE EDUCATION, DO APPRENTICESHIPS STILL HAVE A PLACE IN HAIRDRESSING? “Absolutely. When you have completed an apprenticeship, you understand every job in the salon and how everybody thinks. It is very grounding. We have about 40 apprentices at any one time and they do NVQ levels 1 and 2 in-house before going on to the Charles Worthington Training programme. One of the good things about being an apprentice is that they know how demanding the clients are and they never want to run before they can walk. They qualify as stylists when they and we think they are ready, and not before.” HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE TO COMPLETE? “About three years, including two weeks at the end where they have their own clients every hour throughout the day to make sure they can cope with the stresses of ‘running a column’ ,as it’s called, in a busy central London salon with a very demanding clientele.” WHAT BENEFITS DO APPRENTICES BRING TO YOUR BUSINESS? “Our philosophy is that you should enjoy every moment and Presentation Evenings where friends and family come and watch the youngsters at work. The apprentices are nervous and that pushes them creatively to an extra level. You can see how proud they are — and their parents. They are getting encouragement at home from parents who are involved with their work and also at the salon from us — you could say it is a two-pronged approach. “This year we are launching some courses at our Covent Garden salon for apprentices from other salons. This includes the Charles Worthington NVQ Graduate Finishing School course, where we will turn apprentices from other salons, who are at the end of their training, into graduate stylists.”make every day count. We take on people who want to be the best. As more stylists come up through the ranks, our culture gets stronger and becomes infectious in a healthy way.”Founded in 1921 as a manufacturer of thermometers, Terumo has evolved into an innovative organisation that services the medical sector worldwide. NO AGENCIES PLEASE.‘‘‘‘Our clients expect a fantastic cut and colour and want to know exactly what is going to happen, with no surprisesAND WHAT DO APPRENTICES GET OUT OF THE SYSTEM? “I think there is something to be gained from learning from the bottom up. Every salon, town and region has its own clientele and if you become a stylist in a salon where you were an apprentice you have a certain confidence because you really know the ropes. Youngsters sometimes join us feeling a bit lost and it is lovely to watch them grow in confidence and skill and become part of our ‘family’. Some have then gone on to open their own salons or become part of our artistic team.” YOU WENT TO COLLEGE AND JOINED A SALON AS A GRADUATE. DO YOU FEEL YOU MISSED OUT? “Not really because college is like a salon — except it is closed to the public. You still sweep floors and do the other jobs of an apprentice. And you work on models instead of the public. Having said that, I amtotally committed to apprenticeships as an employer for the reasons I have explained.” WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOOD AND A BAD APPRENTICESHIP? “In a good apprenticeship, there will be trainers who are fantastic at what they do and are also very motivated. In a bad one, the whole approach is a bit lacklustre, training is secondary and apprentices are taken on to sweep the floors. Sweeping floors is part of the job, but much more important things need to be learnt. Craft and communication skills are the cornerstone of good training. Our clients expect a fantastic cut and colour and want to know beforehand exactly what is going to happen — with no surprises.” ANY OTHER SPECIAL FEATURES OF A CHARLES WORTHINGTON TRAINING? “Once a year we have ApprenticeHAVE APPRENTICESHIPS CHANGED SINCE YOU LAUNCHED YOUR FIRST BUSINESS 22 YEARS AGO? “Everything about hairdressing has changed. It has become much more professional in response to clients who have read the magazines and seen the television makeovers and know what they want. Standards are higher and the qualifications are harder to get. Youngsters want to go to a salon that offers a good training as a gateway to a career that is creative, dynamic and fast. What other job gives you the satisfaction of creating something wonderful every hour that makes a client look and feel fantastic?” For more information on careers at Charles Worthington, visit www.charlesworthington.@JOBS ONLINE: jobs.telegraph.co.uk/ careers-insiderGPMD Sales Director £50,000 OTE, based in London GPMD is a dynamic website development company needing a Sales Director who can deliver their ambitious growth plans.
