hose keen to embark on a career that will have a positive impact on the lives of others, should consider engineering. “Engineering may involve high-profile pursuits such as building bridges, fast cars and tiny computers, but it’s also, more broadly, about human development — it’s about people,†says Andrew Lamb, a visiting lecturer for the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB), and an experienced engineer in disaster relief. “Engineers can use their skills to fight climate change, prevent conflict, tackle global health issues and feed the growing world population. And they can win the fight faster and more completely than other professions,†he claims. The Arup Cause is a further ethical initiative that works closely with charities such as WaterAid and Engineers Without Borders to provide expertise and funding for development projects. TELL ME MORE ABOUT THEIR GRADUATE SCHEME Arup ID’s two-year graduate development programme offers the prospect of chartered status, technical courses, secondments and ‘soft’ skills modules covering presentation skills and time management. Those who express an interest in development work will be considered for relevant placements. WHAT PROJECTS MIGHT I BE INVOLVED IN? Sustainable community projects range from designing new hospitals, schools and transport projects to delivering renewable energy strategies. Fourteen talented engineers can now apply for one of 50 prestigious Newton International Fellowships backed by the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society.
