*** B12 *** *** THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2009 THE DAILY TELEGRAPH *** SPECIAL REPORT WASTE MANAGEMENT JOBS ONLINE: The Daily Telegraph jobs.telegraph.co.uk/ca Put your trust in trash T GETTY, PHOTOLIBRARY he collection, treatment and final management of millions of tons of waste and recyclables is one of the UKs key industries, with a dynamic and secure future. The waste management industry currently employs 141,000 people, including scientists, strategists, chemical engineers and environmental planners, and leads the way in technology and innovation. Waste management is a fast-moving, service-oriented business and employers are looking for innovative thinkers, says Malcolm Bevan, managing director of specialist recruiter, Executive Futures. The demand is growing and people of high calibre can expect to work on increasingly sophisticated projects. Viridor is one of the largest resource and waste management companies, with revenues up 15 per cent in 2008/09 to 522.7 million. The company, which has reported strong profit growth despite the recession, recently won the bid to deliver the Greater Manchester waste and renewable energy project, the largest of its kind in the UK. David Robertson, Viridors finance director, says that the companys success spells good news for job seekers. We currently employ more than 2,500 people across the UK and continually invest in recruitment as new contracts are won. Ongoing developments in the UKs waste management and renewable energy policies create major opportunities for Viridor. Driving the rapid changes in this sector are government initiatives, which have been prompted by climate change and growing environmental awareness. In particular, the emphasis is on finding green solutions to the problem of the increasing amount we throw away. In a bid to reduce the volume of trash sent to landfill sites, the onerous landfill tax already stands at 40 per ton this year and is due to increase by 8 in subsequent years a massive financial headache for supermarkets, construction firms and local councils. Its time for a change of attitude about waste management what this sector may lack in glamour, it more than makes up for in dynamism, innovation and career potential. Thea Jourdan reveals some exciting opportunities According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), waste typically costs up to four per cent of a companys turnover. Technology is seen as one of the answers and huge investment has gone into devising ways to use rubbish for fuel and heat, thereby avoiding landfill tax entirely. Graduates of science and engineering are in particular demand as companies compete to find the most efficient ways to achieve this. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one tried and tested method of extracting methane fuel from organic household waste, and it is likely to become big business here by 2010 when a wave of plants becomes operational. There is plenty of raw material to keep thousands of AD plants working at full stretch. According to WRAP, the Government-backed, not-for- profit company, Waste and Resources Action Programme, we are currently throwing away 7.4 million tons of food every year. Other technologies include the vitrification of low-level nuclear We are throwing away more than 7.4 million tons of food a year waste to render it harmless, and gasification and in-vessel composting, both used to turn organic waste into fuel. The recession has slightly affected the speed of the development of new technologies, which require a lot of start-up investment, but the underlying trend is remorseless. This is the future and it has its own unstoppable momentum, says Bevan, who has been recruiting management and technical professionals in this area for the last eight years. The recycling industry is a huge part of the waste management sector, contributing around 5.5 billion to the UK economy, while directly and indirectly supporting around 100,000 jobs. Marcus Gover, director of market development at WRAP, says, The growth of the recycling industry is a real success story. In a relatively short space of time, recycling has become a way of life for UK households and businesses, with 65 per cent of us considering ourselves to be committed recyclers. People now want even more materials to be recycled, and this demand for expansion means recycling businesses are very comfortable with evolution and innovation. There continue to be exciting developments which drive the industry forward. Although people with technical expertise are clearly in high demand, those with management experience in related industries, including manufacturing, logistics and quarrying, can also do very well in waste management. Project managers, who may be drawn to the sector mid-career, can expect to earn between 35,000 and 45,000. Consultants are popular choices with employers because of their ability to parachute in and deal with specific projects. Neil Glover, managing director of Earth Recruit, started out as a consultant himself and recommends the route. It allows you to work in a lot of different areas over time and has an element of flexibility, he says. Anyone working in waste management earns more than just cash rewards. You get a lot of job satisfaction knowing that you are helping to create a greener, cleaner industry, says John Welbank, director of North West Biogas Ltd, an AD plant which is currently under construction at the Hillhouse industrial complex in Thornton Cleveleys, Lancashire. We are going to help to dispose cleanly of 40,000 tons of commercial waste each year, and sell electricity and heat direct to local users. You get a buzz from helping to make a real difference to climate change, as well as producing good returns for shareholders.
