*** *** *** *** Inside A pull-out guide to the 2010 NECR exhibition ENGINEERING CAREERS IN Thursday, April 22, 2010 jobs.telegraph.co.uk/ca The Daily Telegraph In association with Engineering is about to enter a new golden era in which opportunities will be plentiful for talented and committed individuals. Thats according to the experts, who also predict there will be a huge rise in demand for technical skills as the UK builds its low-carbon economy. Coupled with the fact that engineering has an ageing workforce, it should be a very attractive career choice indeed. The children who are at school now will be the beneficiaries of this situation, if they decide to follow a career in engineering, says Professor Sir William Wakeham, vice president of The Royal Academy of Engineering. Our job is to ensure they seize the opportunities with both hands. The UK will need to recruit an estimated 334,000 new engineers and technicians into manufacturing by 2017, according to the latest Engineering UK statistical forecasts. Specialist recruiting company Reed Engineering says there is already a buzz from employers and engineering recruitment is on the rise. The negative trend in engineering recruitment is definitely beginning to reverse, with a wide range of clients across the board now taking on people again. The trend is upwards throughout the sector, says Gary Taylor, business manager at Reed Engineering. However, over the next 10 years, the population of 15- to 24-year-olds is set to drop by eight per cent, presenting the industry with a steadily diminishing pool of talent from which to recruit. At present, government and industry leaders are uniting to try and ensure that the predicted skills shortage is averted. The focus is on encouraging more young people to think about entering the sector. A new report calls for a wide range of science and engineering role models to be made available to children and young BLUEPRINT FORSUCCESS Forget media studies, drama or psychology: todays far-sighted pupils should be considering courses in engineering. Thea Jourdan looks at the growing opportunities as the industry gears up to prevent a serious skills shortage people. The Royal Academy of Engineerings new fund-raising campaign, called Making Things Better, aims to raise 16.5 million to create a national forum for engineering and to attract more young people into a wide range of engineering roles, including technicians. Paul Jackson, chief executive of EngineeringUK and a member of the Science for Careers group, says the problem starts with the school curriculum. What we find is that the e for engineering is silent in the STEM science, technology, engineering and maths curriculum until a child is at least 14. Design and technology is very popular in primary schools, but how these things relate to engineering and manufacturing is not being explored. Jackson believes that an all-ages careers service should start operating in primary schools. We need to indicate the broad possibilities when children are still enthusiastic about the subject. We need to make them aware it is not just about producing gear boxes, but also about the future water supply and sustainable energy. The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair, which took place last month and is organised by EngineeringUK, is one example of engineering reaching out to the young. Altogether, 22,545 people attended the fair in Manchester, more than three times as many as the 6,500 who attended the inaugural fair CONTINUED OVERLEAF Explosive stuff: the BAE Systems stall (above) and lessons in wind power (overleaf) at The Big Bang fair PLUS: HATS OFF TO ROOF ENGINEERS, WOMEN IN INDUSTRY, TRAINING WITH THE NAVY, NATURE-INSPIRED TECHNOLOGY Tesla Engineering Limited provides a complete design, build, test and delivery service, producing electro- magnets for scientific and industrial uses.
