NEWS BITES A BASINGSTOKE man has won a town centre competition after trying to avoid doing the shopping! Ian Sellers chose the name for a new beer at Lloyds No1 Bar in Festival Place while waiting for his wife to finish in the centre. His winning name, Festivale, won him a meal for two at the bar, two cinema tickets, two cocktails at Coal Bar Grill and free parking. Youths attacked by hammer gang for triathlon challenge in aid of charity A BASINGSTOKE youth group must say goodbye to their current base next month, as the building is due for demolition. The 3rd Basingstoke Boys’ Brigade will bid farewell to St Andrews Church hall and move to a temporary home at Trinity Methodist church. To mark the occasion, they are holding a barbecue on Friday August 28 at 6.30pm for all current boys, ex-members and staff. For more information, call 01256 329616. Fun fundraiser AN OAKLEY business is holding a fun day next month to raise funds for Naomi House Children s Hospice. J K Recruitment is hosting the event at Kempshott Village Hall on August 15, with a wide variety of stalls and events for all the family. There will also be an auction with lots including a Thomas the Tank Engine desk, four-ball golf and VIP tickets all going under the hammer. The event runs from 11am-5pm. you mum? registering all the time. “The good thing is these sessions are free and are a great way to meet other mums while keeping fit” For a small fee, there is also a weekly circuit class on a Thursday at Sherfield School sports hall, taught by Caroline Sherlock, who is a qualified gym instructor. Iron Mum will include two triathlon events: Buns of Steel – a 3km run, 6km cycle and strength sprint and Abs of Iron – a 6km run, 12km cycle and strength sprint. The sprints will involve carrying a heavy weight while sprinting a short distance. Iron Mum is all about having fun while keeping fit but the organisers say there is a serious point behind it. They believe that mums who exercise provide a positive role model for their children and help them see fitness as a part of everyday life. All proceeds from the day will go to Basingstoke National Childcare Trust and Bramley WI Lite. “We re hoping to make this an annual event, with training commencing in the spring each year,” Alison added. For more details, visit www. ironmum.co.uk or email bramleyironmum@googlemail.c TWO teenagers were threatened with a knife and hammer during an attack in Basingstoke earlier this month. The incident occurred at around 10pm on Saturday July 18 when the youths, aged 17 and 19, were walking along Pear Tree Way. Three men got out of a parked car and threatened them before stealing a mobile phone, wallet and silver chain from the 19-year-old. They then slapped the younger boy in the face before leaving. Both victims were uninjured. One of the thugs was white, aged 19, of skinny build and had black, spiky hair. Another was white with very short hair and a big forehead, while the third attacker was aged 18 to 20, with a chubby face and of big build. PC Jennifer Lovegrove, of Basingstoke Targeted Patrol Team, said: “Incidents like this are, thankfully rare in Basingstoke but we are obviously taking the investigation seriously. “Although the area was quiet at the time, we believe that someone may have been disturbed by it and seen something. “We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw three men in a silver car parked in Pear Tree Way on the Saturday. Anyone with information about the attack should call PC Lovegrove on 0845 045 45 45 or the Crimestoppers charity, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
