The large and extremely well-equipped industrial kitchen gives the opportunity to organise gastronomy events, which the company will focus on even more in the future. (Photo: Jan Nygaard A/S) ONE OF THE LARGEST CAR DEALERS IN DENMARK Jan Nygaard is a car dealer unlike most others. He has successfully created a symbiosis between a car dealership and a cultural facility. (Photo: Henrik Malmgreen) making event called Search for Talent, where local knowledge-intensive enterprises and technology companies were looking for new blood. Hosting that event gave us the opportunity to help international students market their talents to businesses, Jan Nygaard says. But the event room in the belly of the building is not the only thing making this dealership unique. A large industrial kitchen On the first floor next to the lounge is an extremely well-equipped industrial size kitchen. It has been used for gourmet events, with visits from a professional chef or people cooking themselves and having a good time for instance after a full day of team building, which is another type of event Nygaard enjoys housing. At those events we dont need to use our event room. We also have a separate building which is very suitable for seminars and courses. It is also used frequently for our own internal teachings, and after a long days work sitting in an office, many people The large event room located on Firskovvej seats between 400 and 500 guests. (Photo: Jan Nygaard A/S) enjoy activities in our kitchen, relaxing with good food and wine, Nygaard says. Important digital tools Another focus for this enterprising businessman is linking the physical and the digital universe. This is probably the area that has the greatest influence on his everyday life as a car dealer. In fact, an entire room is set up for virtual reality, giving customers an opportunity to virtually, and thus digitally, design and set up their new BMW. Todays customers, not just ours but customers in general, are extremely informed when they walk through the door. They gather information online, and one might think that would help them pick the car they want. In fact, we often see the opposite; they get too much information and maybe end up a little confused or insecure, says Nygaard. Advice right on the money Therefore, it is important that the guidance provided hits home at the first attempt. In this regard, digital tools are indispensable when it comes to making the right sale. Jan Nygaard goes on to talk about how new technologies will play a significant role in the future: augmented reality, for instance, which is an extra digital information layer for tablets or smartphones. Our cars have become increasingly digital as well. When we hand over a new car to a customer, it takes an hour and a half to set up the digital information system so it matches the customers individual profile. Therefore, to me it makes great sense to focus on the digital aspect, says Nygaard, who is fascinated by the many possibilities. A car dealer unlike the rest With his mindset and the other activities at the dealership, it is safe to say that Jan Nygaard is a car dealer unlike most others. He is trained in the automotive industry and has a passion for challenging both himself and his company. This is particularly true when marketing the company. Jan Nygaard sells some 5,000 new cars per year from his two store locations in Lyngby and Amager. This is an impressively high number, and the same goes for the number of test drives, which adds up to between 20,000 and 25,000 per year. The car dealership located on Firskovvej in Lyngby is 8,000 sqm in size. The large event room makes up 1,000 of those square meters and seats 400 to 500 people. The event room is equipped with all the latest AV technology, enabling live streaming of the events. This opportunity was seized when hosting a major e-sports event that lasted a full week. Nygaards ambition is to create a unique image of the BMW brand in the eyes of the local community. I have reached the point where, when hiring a new employee to work in sales or marketing, I dont automatically look for candidates with experience from the car industry. I look for their creative qualities and whether they think digitally and outside boxes, Nygaard explains. And it has worked. Over time, the number of potential customers at the dealership has increased 30 percent. KG S . LY N G BY FUTURE 15
