I am positive that investments made in a green transition will strengthen competitiveness, not weaken it. CEO of Microsoft Denmark, Nana Bule. In her keynote speech, CEO of Danish IT company KMD, Eva Berneke, stated that when uniting climate ambitions and technology, Denmark is an important player. She also noted the good opportunities for Danish technology exports. (Photo: KMD). Microsoft shows the way to a green transition Transitioning to a green economy does not happen by itself. A green transition requires technology. Such technology is constantly gaining ground and is integrated into many sectors of society, and we are only just starting to see the range of opportunities it offers. In late summer, some of these technologies were showcased at the Sustainability Forum hosted by Microsoft Denmark in Lyngby. By Henrik Malmgreen Even though the IT industry itself is far from the biggest consumer of energy and resources, it plays a significant role for green transition. The reason for this is simple - IT is not only a tool in and of itself, it plays a crucial role in reducing carbon footprint. This is the case both in Denmark and worldwide. That is why Microsoft Denmark hosted the Sustainability Forum this past summer, an event that focused on the ecological responsibility of the 24 KG S . LY N G B Y FUTURE industry itself as well as its sustainability interaction with other sectors. The event was moderated by Cecilie Beck from Danish television channel TV2. She kicked off the event with the following words: Governments arent the only ones who can make plans on behalf of the climate. So can businesses. She went on to mention Microsoft, whose operations have been carbon neutral since 2012. Only five years from now, all Microsoft data centres will run on 100 percent renewable energy, and by 2030, the entire corporation will be carbon negative. The ultimate goal for Microsoft is that by 2050 the company will have offset all carbon emissions the company has ever produced, since Bill Gates founded it in 1975. Must work across industries In her welcoming speech, CEO of Microsoft Denmark Nana Bule made it clear that the entire tech industry has a great responsibility to reduce its own climate footprint, and that this responsibility goes even further. Businesses need to be aware of more than just their own emissions, she noted. In order to make changes with real impact, the entire value chain must be examined, down to the smallest detail. According to Nana Bule, we already have many technologies to reduce carbon emissions, and they are just waiting to be applied. Therefore, we need to take a look across industries to ensure that the technologies at hand are also in fact put to use. This requires collaboration with clients and partners, Nana Bule said, referring to the carbon footprint left by, for instance, transportation or heavy industry. Even though opting for such an intensive environmental strategy costs
