On Tuesday, June 16th, Science City Lyngby opened Denmarks first national testing centre for retail-industry technology. RetailTech Lab was inaugurated by Charlotte Mark, CEO of Microsoft Development Copenhagen and chair of Science City Lyngby; Brian Mikkelsen, CEO at the Danish Chamber of Commerce; and Tommy Ahlers, Member of the Danish Parliament for the Liberal Party of Denmark Venstre and entrepreneur. (Photo: Science City Lyngby) FACTS ABOUT RETAILTECH LAB etailTech Lab is a nonR profit initiative created by Science City Lyngby and its partners. It allows traders, big and small, to come by and get inspiration from startups and their solutions for the retail industry. One area of focus is how to combine physical shopping with the online sphere, both when it comes to competition in general and to strengthening the existing online departments of a given store. Selling products from a physical store and at the same time from an online store makes, for instance, stockpile management and distribution more of a challenge. However, Kim Hein is confident that if approached properly, the two areas can be combined in a way that makes consumers more conscious about physical stores. Those who believe that online shopping marks the death of the physical store can think again. But for that to happen, retailers need to get ahead of the curve. RetailTech Lab is set up to facilitate meetings, present technology and solutions, but also to act as a practice store, allowing businesses to test the coupling of a given product and a store. (Photo: Science City Lyngby). tain, the image of Lyngby as an active and exciting shopping city. Kim Hein adds that maintaining an open mind definitely helps strengthen local commercial activities when it comes to the solutions offered by the RetailTech Lab in the future. Technology without borders We have a collaboration with Sportmaster, a Danish sporting goods chain, and their parent company Sportmaster Group, based in Singapore. This gives us a unique opportunity for collaboration, both when it comes to promoting Danish startups in Asia as well as creating Asian interest in companies in Denmark, and especially in Lyngby, says Hein. To Kim Hein, the international potential of RetailTech Lab, poised at the first floor of Lyngby Storcenter is considerable. And this potential can benefit local retail. The current challenge of renewing retail means embracing digital technologies, which famously do not depend on national boundaries. Small businesses must get onboard Many innovative businesses are represented One of our finest tasks is to prepare the ground for the many startups out there while making retail more innovative. We do that by taking in the best of both worlds, the physical store and the online world - Lab Director Kim Hein. at RetailTech Lab. The premises are divided into four areas: an event area; a work and meeting area; a tech and demo area for presenting solutions; and finally an area where retail businesses and tech companies can meet each other in a tangible test setup called the Store of the Future. This retail incubator allows them test new solutions in a safe and protected environment. We have seen interest from companies such as COOP, Ikea and Magasin even Amazon contacted us. But success is not achieved until we manage to reach out to individual retailers, Hein explains. He adds that a lot can be learned from large shopping chains. In his experience, they are keen on sharing their experience and have more muscle to try out new solutions. The best of both worlds One of our greatest tasks is to prepare the KG S .
