PEOPLE, PLACES & PROCESSES The management at Microsoft in Lyngby has noticed that while some of their 850 employees like going remote, others still prefer working from the office. The organization must be ready to handle varying employee needs. Covid really put focus on work-life balance, and our entire work culture is undergoing transformation. This may have come as a surprise to some managers. Remote work may have been frowned upon in some organizations. Yet, it turns out that work done remotely is just as productive as work done from the office. According to the 2021 edition of the Work Trade Index, a Microsoft internal survey carried out among 30,000 of its employees in 31 countries, 81 percent respond that their management gives them more flexibility. HOW MICROSOFT VIEWS ITS TASKS At the office: Innovative meetings, conferences, staff development dialog, new relationships through social activities or collaborative learning. Remote online work: Status meetings, operative tasks, meetings with international colleagues, high concentration work such as preparing a presentation or individual learning. came naturally. That is no longer the case, now that we communicate largely via computer screens, tablets or smartphones. Relationships between co-workers have suddenly taken on new formats. The so-called SCRUM is a completely redesigned room at Microsoft in Lyngby, which provides a real opportunity to unfold the digital workday. (Photo: Natália Kocichová) Digital get-togethers for drinks on Fridays is just one example, said Charlotte Mark while emphasizing that technology, learning and social relations go hand in hand. It is crucial to understand that work is no longer a place. Its an activity. It is a question of facilitating different work modes for different preferences while underpinning the different activities that make up a days work. But life after hours should not be forgotten. It has dawned upon both managers and employees that productivity remains high, regardless of whether work is done remotely or from the office. The important thing is not whether to call it the hybrid workplace, the modern workplace or something else completely. To Microsoft, it is all about the three Ps People, Places & Processes. And the company, off course, has the necessary tools for collaborative remote work, such as Office 365. The hybrid work model is more than just working remotely sometimes and from the office at other times. It is not just about having good online tools either. It is a new way of making sure to incorporate and consider differences, making room for all employees to do their best. Charlotte Mark, CEO at Microsoft Development Copenhagen. KG S .
