High Seas Treaty gives us hope
A positive step for
preserving our oceans
has just been made by
the United Nations
Climate Change
ELODIE SUMMER HARRISON FOLLWELL
The High Seas, which make up twothirds of our world's oceans, are a
very important resource for our
earth to function, providing food,
energy, and other resources for us
to
live.
Due
to
human
overconsumption (mainly overfis
hing), marine pollution, and clima
te change, these oceans are heavily
threatened. Some scientists specu
late that this could lead to the dan
ger of all of the seas creatures
becoming extinct by 2100, and 30%
becoming extinct by 2030. This
heart-breaking news can leave us
feeling depressed, doubtful, and as
if there is no hope left; however,
the United Nations wants to ad
dress these difficult challenges.
The UN High Seas Treaty Main
Goals
On March 4, the United Nations
proposed a new treaty, called the
UN High Seas Treaty. This treaty's
main aim is to set out rules and re
strictions for illegal or just general
activities taking place on the high
seas without permission. This
news article will look at the key
aims of the treaty, the challenges it
faces, and the potential impact it
could have on ocean life. The UN
High Seas Treaty is an international
agreement whose primary goals
are to control activities on the high
seas. The treaty is being made un
der the United Nations Convention
on the Law of the Sea, which is a
treaty that gets to govern and
make laws in the worlds oceans
and seas, primarily governing all
uses of their oceans and most
certainly the ocean's resources. So,
as said before, the UN treaty wants
to control all activities on the high
seas, which include fishing, ship
ping, oil and gas exploration, and
even scientific research. Overfis
hing, for example, has led to a
huge decline in fish stocks, while
marine pollution has created lots
of dead zones in the ocean. Dead
zones are oceans with poor oxygen
to protect and sustain marine life.
This treaty is trying to put in place
a well working structure for sustai
nable use of marine resources, in
cluding the creation of marine pro
tected areas, which are places with
special protection.
The Challenges the UN are
Facing
However, there are some issues
and challenges facing the UN High
Seas Treaty. One of them is that
some countries have raised con
cerns that the treaty could hold
back economic development by li
miting their access to resources on
the high seas. Going over the fi
nancial aspects of the treaty. Some
industry groups (primarily those
in the oil and gas industry) have
publicly expressed their concerns,
with some claiming that the treaty
could create unnecessary rules
that would raise costs and comple
tely halt exploration activities.
Another challenge facing the tre
aty is deciding who gets what.
Some countries have argued that
the treaty could undermine their
power over their territorial waters
and their private economic zones.
They have also expressed concern
that the treaty could give way too
much power to the United Nations.
The importance of preserving
our oceans
Despite all of these challenges, lots
of people associated and suppor
ters of the Un High Seas Treaty ar
gue that it is very necessary to ad
dress the growing threats to the
ocean's health and biodiversity.
They argue that the treaty is an es
sential tool, for protecting and
creating a sustainable use of mari
ne resources, and also protecting
the high seas for the future. So the
potential impact the treaty could
have on our oceans could be very
significant and important. If the
treaty is successfully carried
through, it could lead to a sustai
nable use of marine resources on
the high seas. This could lead to a
major reduction in overfishing, a
decrease in marine pollution, and
an increase in the protection of the
oceans around the world. The tre
aty could also have wider impo
rtance for the global community.
The high seas are a shared ocean
(meaning shared resource) that be
longs to all humanity, and the tre
aty could help ensure that these
areas are properly and fairly mana
ged.
The new High Seas Treaty is
essential to tame the wild
west mentality of exploitation
in the last frontier of
international waters, a place
where anything goes in the
pursuit of profit
However, the UN High Seas
Treaty is still being discussed and
negotiated, and it remains un
certain whether this treaty will
actually work and live up to its
goal. The fact that the treaty has
been proposed and is being talked
about is still a very important step
towards preserving our oceans. All
we can do now is hope, push for
more sustainable practices, and
fight against those who seek to
exploit our precious natural
resources.
FACTBOX
Some scientists around the
world, believe that all of the
seas creatures could become
extinct by 2100, and 30%
become extinct by 2030.
However, the treaty wants to
protect at least 30% of ocean
areas by 2030.
