This project develops a new electrode-based salinity
sensor that together with temperature data collection
can be deployed on whales for monitoring oceanographic conditions in Arctic water. Eventually the
new animal borne sensor technology can be used for
monitoring effects of changes in climatic conditions in
remote and inaccessible areas.

A field program was undertaken between 4 and 7 September 2017 using the research vessel R / V Porsild as a
platform. The aim of the cruise was to collect data for
the EU project ICE-ARC focusing on European whaling
and hunting activities in the Disko Bay area during the
17 th to 19 th Century. The 2017 field campaign focused
on whaling sites in the Disko Bay region which were
important in the 16 th 18 th century. The documentation
included collection of sediment cores, site investigations on land and the use of drones to collect data
for 2D images of recognized structures in the field.
