and biodiversity. Monitoring these processes allows differentiation between
benign and harmful blooms and supports the preservation of ecosystem integrity. Ultimately, such phenomena not
only expand scientific understanding
but also underscore the resilience and
fragility of tropical coastal ecosystems.

XMAS 2027 HAB Sessions:
Registration Now Open
2017, the HAB sessions at the Xiamen
Symposium on Marine Environmental
Sciences (XMAS, Xiamen, China) have
provided a consistent platform for advancing research and collaboration in
the Asia-Pacific region. At XMAS 2027,
which will be held from January 11 to
14, 2027, two complementary sessions
will be featured, reflecting both applied
and fundamental frontiers of HAB science in the Asia-Pacific region.
The session Harmful Algal Blooms
in the Asia-Pacific Region brings together recent advances in taxonomy,
biodiversity, and bloom dynamics, including benthic and emerging HAB species. The session highlights progress in
ecophysiology and toxin biosynthesis,
alongside innovations in early warning
systems such as metabarcoding, quantitative assays, and satellite-based monitoring. Contributions will also address
mitigation strategies, ranging from
modified clays to automated observing
platforms, and regional trends in bloom
frequency and distribution under the
changing climate. Emphasis is placed
on interdisciplinary and transboundary
HARMFUL ALGAE NEWS NO. 83 / 2026
collaborations to enhance prediction
and management capacity.
The session Omics and Ecological
Adaptation of Marine Dinoflagellates
under Global Change focuses on the
unique biology and adaptive potential
of dinoflagellates. With growing access to high-quality genomic resources,
this session explores how multi-omics
approaches are transforming our understanding of stress responses, phenotypic plasticity, and evolutionary
processes. Topics include genomic drivers of climate adaptation, mechanisms
underpinning HAB formation, and the
integration of omics data into ecological
modelling for future projections.
