DTU Skylab is a partner in the Cooperate project along with Science City Lyngby and Eindhoven University of Technology. Here, the stakeholders are gathered for an initial meeting at DTU Skylab. (Photo: Science City Lyngby) OOPERATE Now other EU countries should learn from Science City Lyngby When looking beyond Europe, there is a significant difference in innovation capacity. Science City Lyngby has long established itself as a prominent innovation district, and in the spring 2024, it will share its experiences with the Czech Republic's capital, Prague. Here, the partners in the Cooperate project are gathered for a discussion at Eindhoven University of Technology on how to guide and advise Prague on the groundwork that precedes innovation, such as financing, analysis, and activities. (Photo: Science City Lyngby) By Henrik Malmgreen For more than 10 years, Science City Lyngby has demonstrated to the world how far collaboration can take you. Using a classic Triple Helix model, the collaboration between the local university, DTU, the business sector, and the public sector has laid the foundation for an innovation district whose cohesion has contributed to creating a unique and dynamic diversity in Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality when it comes to technological innovation. This has now caught the attention of the EU, and together with Eindhoven University of Technology, Science City Lyngby has been selected to inspire other EU countries and cities. According to Marianna Lubanski, CEO of Science City Lyngby, there is a significant difference in the level of innovation capacity in different countries, measured using an Innovation Score Board, where both Denmark and the Netherlands rank high. A brand-new EU project initiated "EU has now launched the Cooperate project, which, with financial support from the Union, aims to make efforts to raise other countries higher on the list. The Czech Republic and Prague have been chosen as a pilot project. So, in the spring, together with representatives from Eindhoven University of Technology, Science City Lyngby will visit to provide information on what we have done to drive innovation," Marianna Lubanski says. She further explains that, for example, in Prague, where there is both a technical university and two other universities, there is no collaboration whatsoever. Not even with local businesses or local authorities, which means innovation more or less starts from scratch. Therefore, Science City Lyngby has helped create what can best be described as a handbook or manual on how to approach such a process. DTU Skylab participates as a partner "We have had great success with our approach here in Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality, but there's no guarantee it will be successful everywhere. That's why the handbook is prima- rily meant to be an inspiration. For example, Eindhoven has a different approach, receiving regional support, which we haven't had the opportunity for here, so the overall idea is to facilitate new ideas," Marianna Lubanski elaborates. Science City Lyngby has a close collaboration with DTU Skylab regarding the project, and DTU Skylab will participate in the trip in the spring. After Prague, the plan is to invite two other countries to participate in a similar project. It is not yet known who those countries will be, but the applicants will be assessed based on their position on the score board, for example, regarding the number of startups, the size of invested venture capital, and the number of patents initiated in the realm of innovation.
