The great thing about starting a company in DTU's startup environment is that no one laughs at your ideas. There are critical questions, but those questions are meant to guide you in the right direction and support you in the development and commercialization of your product Oline Stærke. Oline Stærke and Holger Weise have found a niche in the IoT product market with a solution that makes configuring sensor functionality extremely easy. Their ambition is to create a healthy and viable company while contributing to setting a standard for the IoT market. Currently, IoTBee employs the two founders and three part-time employees who will soon transition to fulltime roles. (Photo: Henrik Malmgreen) Young local startup with success The Student Startup of the Year 2023 has, with its foundation at DTU, developed a business concept in a rapidly growing market, namely the Internet of Things (IoT) market. By Henrik Malmgreen Oline Stærke is a graduate in computer science engineering from DTU, and Holger Weise is a graduate in electronics engineering from the same institution. Together, they have formed a fruitful partnership that in 2023 led to their company, Iotbee, being named the Student Startup of the Year. With just over a year in operation, their shared background from DTU and significant support from both Skylab and Futurebox have allowed them to create an IoT-based business concept that is already showing signs of success. From the outset, they have clearly defined their respective roles. Oline Stærke is responsible for software development and, importantly, busi- ness development, while Holger Weise is in charge of designing the electronics. They have also entered the right market at the right time with the right product a platform that allows customers to easily create a flexible data collection system from various types of sensors. A growing market "It typically involves industrial customers or customers in the utility sector who use temperature sensors, battery meters, flow meters, or depth sensors, in other words, types of sensors with critical functions where it's essential to have easy and quick access to the collected data. The advantage of our solution is that customers are not locked into a fixed configuration but can easily change the functionality of the sensors themselves through a cloud-based platform using Drag-and-Drop," explains Oline Stærke. The Internet of Things and sensor applications are booming, especially in connection with the increasing intelligence of buildings, so the business potential is significant. According to Holger Weise, the challenge is that there is no common standard for data collection and sharing in this field, making it difficult for customers to navigate. An open platform "There are several solutions for data transmission, but we have chosen an existing network called Narrow Band IoT, which is particularly suitable for environments where it is usually difficult to transmit data, such as in deep wells. Narrow Band IoT works well for sensors that need to send small amounts of data under demanding conditions," he explains, noting that Iotbee's platform runs on the regular mobile 4G and 5G network. Oline Stærke further explains that they offer customers a complete package, including software, hardware, as well as data storage and transport on a subscription basis. The real ingenuity of the concept, as mentioned, is that customers don't need any coding experience. The customer buys a hardware box equipped with sensors of their choice, which are preprogrammed. Afterward, the customer can auto-generate the desired configuration and modify it later using the software and a Drag-andDrop menu. KG S . LY N G BY 23
