Nostalgia, pure nostalgia. The idea behind Classic Car House is not just to be a show-off exhibition excuse the term. The idea is to provide a multifaceted experience of the development of cars in the post-war era, the years when the car became everyone's possession. (Photo: Classic Car House) Where the DKK 500 Million Went The building that previously housed the agricultural museum was completed in 1915, and the curious thing is that K.W. Bruun actually sold its first car in 1914. Therefore, there is a historical connection to today, where the building now houses a car museum. In the early stages of the project, Anders Bruun looked at an area facing the Helsingør motorway, where Formula and Zleep are now located. However, he didn't think it was the optimal location for a house with classic cars. Naturally, he collaborated with Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality to fi nd a suitable location, and suddenly the old agricultural museum became an option. After the agricultural museum moved to Viborg in the 1970s, the neighboring Frilandsmuseet used the buildings for a period. However, in 2008, the municipality purchased the land and the building with the intention of relocating several municipal functions. But once a consulting engineering fi rm had assessed the condition of the buildings, those plans were put to rest. The foundation needed support That's right, it has cost DKK 500 million from the first groundbreaking to the opening on August 19th, when the gates were opened to an interested public. It's a significant sum, a considerable sum indeed, but no compromises have been made, and when you think about it, DKK 500 million might not be that bad after all. Lyngby-Taarbæk has gained an attraction like no other, at least not within the country's borders. Ready for lots of events It's an attraction where the focus isn't always solely on the cars; they also serve as a backdrop for meetings and events. In addition to the cars, the venue offers a kitchen, meeting rooms, and, most importantly, event spaces that can be rented. Shortly after the opening, the booking department was already pleased to note that they had booked more than 100 events for the coming year. According to Casper Santin, they are doing everything they can to promote Classic Car House and its many offerings in the local community. Recently, for the third time, they organized the Classic Car Festival in Sorgenfri Castle Gardens, an event that, now that the venue is open, naturally also serves as a promotional opportunity. On the opening day in August alone, more than 1,500 visitors stopped by, so there's no doubt that it's been a success. Evolved along the way Casper Santin has been the director of Classic Cars House since March 2021. In May of the same year, they broke ground, and he has been involved in shaping the venue's development leading up to the opening. Originally, the focus was on a car hotel, but over time, the project gained momentum, and more ideas emerged. When they managed to purchase the According to Casper Santin, the buildings had never been heated before now, and when they seriously started the project, additional surprises emerged. Part of the car museum is located partly in a newly established basement, and the structural calculations showed that the foundation was so poor that no less than 76 additional support points had to be established in the main building before that plan could be realized. Of course, this is one of the contributing reasons why the total cost of the establishment has reached DKK 500 million. This amount also includes expenses for the design and construction of buildings for car sales, car hotel, workshop, event venues, and, most importantly, Karls Hus, which is built in memory of the original K.W. Bruun and also pays homage to the car brands the company has historically represented as well as those it represents today. The project has reached its goal According to the director, the overall project has become more expensive for several reasons. Construction costs have increased due to external factors beyond control, and the project has gradually grown as the level of ambition has increased. Therefore, Casper Santin is understandably pleased that the plans have been fully realized. It's one thing to look at some beautiful visual renderings; it's another to successfully bring those ideas to life. "I certainly feel that we've reached our goal, and I'd like to thank the architect for creating harmony and unity between the existing buildings and the new buildings that have been constructed. Furthermore, the plan was to create an attraction that is not just for a select few but for everyone interested in post-war automotive history. That period is important because it's when the car became everyone's possession and something we can all relate to," says Casper Santin. KG S . LY N G BY 21
