Eva is Very excited about Science Girls There were girls from different grade levels from Lyngby Private School, Fuglsanggård School, Lyngby Gymnasium, Hummeltoft School, Engelsborg School, Virum School, Virum Gymnasium, Trongård School, Kongevejen School, and H.C. Ørsted Gymnasium participating in the introductory event. (Photo: Science Girls) More than 100 Girls at the Introduction Evening Science Girls is initiated by Science City Lyngby with the aim of paving the way for more girls to choose natural sciences in their educational paths. At the introductory event before the summer break, more than 100 girls gathered at the Sustainability Lab in Lyngby, which has become one of the central hubs for activities in Science City Lyngby. The interest was confi rmed by the initiators, and it means that there are already 50 girls on the waiting list for next year's intake. Science Girls targets girls aged 13 to 19, covering grades 7, 8, and 9, as well as high school grades 1, 2, and 3G. Club leader Maiken Nøddekær has been diligent in spreading the word locally, and the program was launched after a trial period with 10 students from Fuglsanggårdsskolen and 10 students from Virum Gymnasium. It was essential from the start to create a club that girls could see themselves in and help shape. Maiken Nøddekær works as a science teacher in the upper grades, and her daily interactions are precisely with the target group that Science Girls aims to reach. Encouraging All Companies to Support "The mixture of age groups and the blend of students from both primary school and high school work really 8 KG S . LY N G BY Eva Frank-Daub, an 8th grader at Fuglsanggårdsskolen, is one of the girls who have joined Science Girls. She has always been interested in natural sciences, and for as long as she can remember, she has dreamed of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. This is not the typical career vision one encounters from a 14-year-old, and whether Eva Frank-Daub will follow this path is, of course, too early to predict, but her interest in participating in Science Girls is significant. "I have been involved since the beginning, which means I was also part of the trial program organized by Science City. I have helped create the club, design the logo, and most importantly, I have helped get other girls interested in participating. I think it's important that as an ambassador for the project, Im of the same age as the other girls," says Eva Frank-Daub. Her mother, Rikke Frank-Daub, also thinks the initiative is excellent, and she is especially pleased that role models are being introduced into the program for the girls to identify with. She believes it's unfortunate that many educational paths are gendered, and she thinks it's great that this tradition is being challenged. PLENTY OF SUPPORT FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES These companies support Science Girls: Topsoe, Cowi, Microsoft, Novo Zymes, NCC, Lyngby Storcenter, Lyngby-Taarbæk Forsyning, Hempel A/S, DTU Skylab. The project is also funded by Tuborgfondet, Danske Bank, and Sydbank. well, just as the girls work together across backgrounds," says Maiken Nøddekær. You can clearly feel her enthusiasm, and her ambition is to promote Science Girls to other cities with the necessary educational and business potential. Viewed locally, Ole Stahl from Topsoe does not hesitate to encourage all companies in Lyngby-Taarbæk to support the initiative. It's not necessary to be a heavyweight knowledge-based company to participate. Technology can, in many ways, support a more sustainable everyday life, and with the current interest in Science Girls, it appears that an initiative has been created that will exist for many years to come. Already in 7th grade, Eva Frank-Daub signed up for extra physics and chemistry at the youth school. Her interest in natural sciences is significant, and she thinks Science Girls is a super cool initiative, as she puts it. Her mother, Rikke Frank-Daub, shares the same opinion. (Photo: Private)
