"At DTU Science Park, we need to be prepared to support many types of businesses, and we need to do even more for the many startup companies emerging from universities," says Steen Donner, CEO of DTU Science Park. (Photo: DTU Science Park) THE COUNTRY'S FIRST AREA CERTIFICATION In general, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) places a strong focus on sustainability. This focus is also present at DTU Science Park, where they hope to become the first area in Denmark to achieve a so-called DGNB Gold Area Certification. They are gradually progressing towards a mid-term certification and, according to CEO Steen Donner, hope to achieve the final certification in 2026. Such an area certification encompasses not only the buildings but also the area's biodiversity, waste management, material consumption, etc. The work on this is being done in close collaboration with the customers who have leased space in the research park. He emphasizes that this is precisely where DTU Science Park excels. Besides that, it's crucial to be more than just a business area. Its important to be a research park that creates a community where everyone works together to make it faster and easier for businesses, big or small, to bring their technologies to market and commercialize them. Intense competition for top talent "We need to support them from the idea stage to a business plan, and we must assist them with all the practical aspects, including fi nding both human resources and investors. The time horizon for being ready with a Deep Tech technology is often more than 10 years, so if we can help trim a year or two from that process, it's a significant gain," says Steen Donner. However, he adds that one of the biggest challenges for the future is finding the necessary talent if startups are to achieve the right organic growth. For this reason, he is pleased with the initiatives taken on various fronts in the community when it comes to reaching out to educational environments to stimulate young people's interest in the natural sciences. Among other things, the natural science education that takes place at the LIFE Campus can be mentioned, where the mission is to strengthen children and young people's general education in the natural sciences and technology, as well as their interest and ambitions to pursue education and specialization in natural science and technology, regardless of their background. Growth in student-driven innovation Also, worth mentioning is H.C. Ørsted Gymnasium, a technical high school (HTX) with a focus on technology and the natural sciences, as well as the newly started project Science Girls, which aims to get girls between the ages of 13 and 19 interested in choosing a career in the natural sciences. These are initiatives that Steen Donner supports because, from his director's chair at DTU Science Park, he senses a growing interest among young people in the field of natural science. "When things are going as well as they actually are, especially in areas like Life Science, it's not just because of the work at DTU and the country's other universities. It's also because, as I see it, there is real potential in student-driven innovation. Students find it fun to create new companies, and the number of startups is growing significantly. Today's youth have the desire and courage to delve into Deep Tech," concludes Steen Donner. KG S . LY N G BY 17
